The roll of a mentor

For those of us that are trying to reach out and mentor children , teens or a specific population is a big responsibility.

When you take on the role of mentor and leader, the first thing that comes to mind is; How can I contribute to the betterment of this individual’s life? What are the tools I can use to lead him/her to take charge of their well being?

It doesn't matter which approach you follow, secular or religious, the goal is to provide support and advice. To inspire others, is important to establish the premise that every person is unique and special.

Be approachable, and use your own experiences as a tool for mentoring. Know your own values and respect theirs. Everyone is different, that is why we are so unique.

Here are some tips that have helped me as a facilitator with teens and domestic violence victims.

These are pointers to encourage them to believe in their own ability to achieve. Let him/ her know:

  • Be proud of who you are- Your culture, your roots and identity are the essence of who you are, unique and beautiful.
  • Life is hard, but nothing that is easy will bring you fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment.
  • Discover your talents and use them- This is what makes you stand out and shine.
  • Always ask for help when you need it- This is sign of courage not weakness.
  • Get involved in your own personal development- Mold yourself like a masterpiece, we all are a work in process. Take responsibility of doing what’s right for you.
  • Define your goals, and make a commitment with yourself to attain them.
  • Accept that we are not always in control of what happens to us, but we can choose the way we react to what happens to us. Attitude is everything.
  • Learn to really love yourself and others. Love is like a seed that needs to be nourished, so you might reap miracles.
  • Be aware of parasites- I use this term for anything that will distract you from achieving your full potential. This might include drugs, gambling, alcohol, gangs and not getting an education.
  • Learn to laugh and be positive- After every storm, the sun will always rise up. Humor is key to have a positive outlook on life. It works for me!

What can we do to make a difference?

See results

On a final note...

It’s not necessary to sugar coat life’s troubles to inspire someone to be more than what they see in the mirror. Just be honest and receptive, Listen.

Remember that pain and obstacles are just a stepping stone to discover the true potential in every person. Keep the good fight, never give up. Stand up every time that you fall, hold your head up high and you will be surprised how far you will go.

I can relate Lady Guinevere, most of the time, they come into our lives to teach us something. (That's how I deal with it.) We always exchange seats between teacher and student. I have cried over a lot of people like that. In most cases we are mere catalysts for people to change their lives. And this should be enough. You did your part. Blessed my child.

I am glad that you are bringin up your hubs to the light of day. I am pleasantly surprised. Do it as long as you can.

I did mentor someone and it did not help them at all. Although she said that it did, it did not and I had to let her go. I didn't like doing that but it is the only way that she would learn. Now she really has hit rock bottom. I know not where she is, but she has set herself up for a really tough life ahead. Her feceral prison term is short but she is now registered as a se..x offender and will be on supervised probation for 20 years after she is released from prison....that is if she even gets to that point.

I have put my life and my husband's job on the line for her. She lied to me and also told me that she didn't like my last letters to her and ripped them up. That was when I broke it off with her. Now she is totally on her own. She will always be in my thoughts, but I can do no more for her at this point...or any future time. It is hard to be a mentor and you get lots of flcak from people.

"use your own experiences as a tool for mentoring" i love this line, and just like everyone else, we all have some unique experinces and could use them to enlighten others and move them towards possibilities path.

This is a great hub! You are who you are. Be proud of yourself and set goals to make your life one of which you can be proud. Shun the negative people and situations; vie to be as positive as you can be. We all have the potential to be amazing. As you say, we are a work in progress. The key is to progress, not regress!

Life and all that is in it

      is a gift from the infinite mind;

And the only way that life can go wrong

is by the limited finite mind.
