Small Business Saturday in Hubbard Ohio
Small Business Saturday
Small Business Saturday is a free event on the last Saturday of each November.
It is sponsored by The Better Business Bureau, American Express and Fed-Ex (there are many local Chamber of Commerce groups that are starting to join in as well) and was started in 2010 as they saw the need to show a little extra support for small business was growing as so many were disappearing each year.
These small businesses do not have big advertizing budgets nor do they have the time to do full scale online outreach and social networking to allow them to easily get noticed.
At the beginning of November each year, the owner of a small, local Brick & Mortar business can apply to be approved to join and to receive ideas, customized online ads and printable ads and other helpful tools for free.
Do a search for "Small Business Saturday" and go to the official website to apply.
If approved, the business owner of a Brick & Mortar small business will receive a box of free Small Business Saturday promotional items to help it to get noticed in its community.
This year (2014), the box held tote bags, pins, signs and stickers.
I added my gift shop's information to each tote bag and will give one out to the first customers in the door today as a "Thank you" for their support and because I am a GREEN living person, I will encourage them to reuse these bags each time they come to my gift shop.
WKBN TV helps local Small Businesses
One of the reporters - Amanda Smith - from our local, Youngstown area TV station - WKBN - contacted me yesterday about stopping by to do a quick video interview and take some photos... for a brief spot that would air on their local 11pm news that night during the Small Business Saturday segment.
It was just out-of-the-blue, she sent a facebook message and said she'd love to stop by and add my shop to the S.B.S. events.
It is nice to have something good happen to me for a change after these last few years.
I tried to talk a little bit about the other 2 shops here in the plaza with me, but she was in a hurry as she still had other folks to see and barely had time to spend here as she still had several places to go. But, if/when folks stop here, I always try tell them about the other 2 shops here so that will help. LOL, I'm sure I looked like a big mess as it was spur-of-the-moment, but that's okay.
I missed the beginning of the segment when it first aired, but the TV spot was on at about 11:15 on WKBN !
They added the video clip to their own website (see the link above) so that I and you could see it.
Thank you Amanda Smith and the WKBN TV station news of Youngstown, Ohio for noticing my little gift shop
I only had 10 minutes to prepare for it so I was a bit of a mess and so nervous, but it came out pretty well. She somehow made me look and sound better than I actually did I'm sure - great editing, thank you so much for making me seem a little bit better than I really am during interviews :)
You can read the story and see the video at the link above.
