Smith's Grocery Store Online Job Application

Updated on December 7, 2010

Smith's Grocery Store also known as Smith's Food and Drug was established in 1932. Lorenzo J. Smith opened the original store in Brigham City, Utah. With the assistance of his son, Dee Smith, the grocery store business went through a large expansion. Smith's Grocery Store went public in 1989.

Unfortunately, the company's expansion into Southern California was a major failure. As a result, Smith's Grocery Store accumulated hundreds of millions of dollars in debt. The company was purchased by Fred Meyer in 1997. Within a few years Fred Meyer was purchased by Kroger Co. Today, Smith's Grocery Store is a subsidiary of Kroger.

Although Smith's is part of the Kroger brands it is still a leader in the retail grocery store industry. Smith's Grocery Store's has roughly 132 retail stores that can be found in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Montana, New Mexico, and Arizona. Smith's Grocery Store business model is based on the "one-stop shop" concept. Grocery stores utilize a mixture of part food center part drug center format.

Smith's Grocery Store is a fast paced and challenging work environment. Employees have a substantial amount of interaction with customers on a daily basis. Employees are trained extensively not only for their specific position but on all aspects. Employees are encouraged to strive to obtain their goals.

In addition to training and many opportunities for career growth, Smith's as a subsidiary of Kroger is able to offer employees competitive salaries and generous benefits. Other benefits include but are not limited to company paid life insurance, voluntary life insurance, dependent group life insurance, and personal accident insurance.

Additional benefits and perks include merit increases, paid vacation program, group legal, incentives program, credit union membership, company paid continuing education program, and much more.
