The power of strong project teams and their cohesiveness is the foundation of great organizations around the world and beyond. Working together toward a goal of common interest, with passion and commitment, is the signature of a team that helps shape a remarkable business brand.

However, regardless of how great a team becomes, challenges are bound to occur due to the diversity of personalities and cultures.

Key Team Problems

  • Poor team communication
  • Lack of participation
  • Lack of passion and creativity
  • Conflict of interest
  • Finger pointing and blaming
  • Ineffective leadership
  • Indifferent performance attitudes
  • No sense of personal ownership

Any of these problems can interfere with team cohesiveness and the ability to successful work together to get great things done. Therefore leaders must have a sense of urgency in putting out team fires as soon as they erupt.

Establishing Strong Project Teams: Preventive Measures

The good thing is to work hard enough to prevent team chaos from the beginning. Make it crystal clear regarding your expectations. Each team member must know his or her responsibilities and how such duties are critical to the success of the team.

You must push your team to develop a WE or US mentality instead of ME or MY mentality. No one person can tackle the project and achieve victory alone. Working as a team is one of the most powerful avenues for getting great things done.

Making sure that everyone understands your expectations and their responsibilities, you should have a whole team meeting at first and then meet with each person individually.

Team members must sacrifice their conflict of interest and accept rules and regulations for the betterment of the team.

Some teams members must disagree accepting his or her responsibilities at first, but if you emphasize how much research and thinking was put into assigning roles, the team member will eventually let down his guards and accept the assignment, despite lingering disagreement.

Strong Project Teams Vs Weak Project Teams

The difference between a dedicated team and a weak one, especially when it comes to accepting responsibilities and moving forward for the sake of team unity and power is an enormous difference maker.

A formidable team knows that the project is beyond the skills of one or two people. Strong project teams also know that the collective power of the group is what going to take the organization to new heights via the successful completion of each project. Customer satisfaction grows due to the quality of service rendered to clients. The company’s position in the marketplace grows in leaps and bounds. Revenue increases.

A weak team consists of members who find it hard to see beyond themselves regardless of the expectations of the team leader. Members constantly whine and complain point fingers and blame one another for lack of quality performance, productivity, and completion.

Team leaders often have to result to some form of corporate discipline or threatening repercussions for not accepting their roles and responsibilities.

The subpar performance of weak teams delays the progress of organizations and marks the difference between success and failure in the marketplace.

By any Means Necessary?

In the insurance industry, I have certainly had my share of working on strong teams. Despite the obstacles that got in our way, we would combine the whole of skills and talents and achieved victory in whatever we had to complete. Even when computers shut down and information was inaccessible, we would take a manual approach to accomplishment our duties and responsibilities.

Dealing with Team Members who are Unwilling to change

So what does a leader do with an unmovable team? He or she does what needs to be done, even if measures must be drastic. If warnings fail, then uncooperative, weak team members must be replaced with members who know how to look beyond themselves and become one with a team and its goals. For a little while, the project may be setbacks and delays in the completion of the project, but the inconvenience is worthwhile over the long haul.

Your goal is to continue to build strong teams that demonstrates reliability and exhibits flexibility when it comes to bringing the vision of the organization to reality. Such a team is a godsend for an organization who desire to rise above the crowd and establish itself as an icon in the industry.
