THE ZEN WAY TO BE AN EFFECTIVE MANAGER

The way is as Clear as Daylight

Any basic truth may be considered as an obvious platitude or a profound way of life. Zen is a perfect example of this, for it is so blindingly obvious that we have a hard time believing it. The message of Zen is, ‘Be simple, don’t be hung up on particular thoughts and sensation. Do not be a slave to your own responses- they come and go simply as reflection of circumstance. Just be natural and spontaneous is everything you do.’ It sounds easy- until you try. For when you try to be natural, you are not! Zen shows us the way of this dilemma. And that is what this book is about.

  • Today's world is filled with knowledge.
  • knowledge and wisdom, Radha think, have to be considered on different levels.
  • In our highly developed world, knowledge can usually be easily obtained if one so desires and makes the effort.
  • It is wisdom, however, that enables one to apply acquired knowledge and give value.
  • Knowledge is obtained by reading books and newspaper, watching television, hearing lectures, and so on.
  • Into practice and continuously applied in response to ever changing circumstances. This, then, is wisdom.
  • It is the best application of knowledge.

Chapter No.1

THE ZEN WAY OF EFFECTIVENESS

Effectiveness reveals itself as crucial to man’s selfdevelopment; to organization development and to the fulfillment and viability of modern society.

If one is a true follower of the way one does not search for faults of the world , but speedly applies oneself to attaining genuine insight. If one can see with perfect clarity, then all is completed.

The whole essence of this book is contained in these tow Questions. Yet their authors are very different. Peter Drucker and his work had a profound influence on management, on industry as a whole and therefore ultimately on society. For, as Drucker continued, as executives work towards becoming effective, they raise the sights of people- of others as we as their own.’ Rinzai, in contrast, was a Chinese monk, a Zen Master who lived in the ninth century and founded one of the ‘five Houses of Zen’, The Rinzai line. Some 300 years latter this school of Zen was brought to Japan; it still flourishes there and also has followers in the west.

Seen in this way, Zen is – or it is better to say, results in nothing more or less than genuine insight, and this is the key to effectiveness. Without this a manager, however technically competent he is and however much authority he has, is of no value to his organization or indeed to himself. The days are long past when the art of management was to find the most profitable ways of getting others to do the work. Today the manager lives in a world of ever increasing scientific, technological and sociological complexity, which, through its enormously dynamic expansion, is ib danger of destroying itself. And so the challenge to the manager is to utilizes every faculty of his or her being so as to be able t perceive the situation both in its widest aspects and its smallest details, and then to act. It is not enough to develop and acquire new management techniques, important and essential as they may be, for without the quality of effectiveness in those who use them they are, to use the expression of an old Zen Master,’ ‘dead words.’

But then we ask, what actually is effectiveness? It is not something which can be defined and measured; directly we attempt to do so we find are measuring something quite different- efficiency. Efficiency is certainly part of effectiveness, but there is much more. This, even if we cannot define it, we can certainly see in action, and nowhere better than in the Zen art of China and Japan. There is the swordfighter, whose weapon swings ‘as through it had a soul of its own’ (Suzuki), so that all the experience and skill he has acquired during his training acts through his intuitive, instant perception of the situation. The Zen painter can capture a leaping cat or a graceful bamboo with a few swift strokes of his brush on the paper, and the music of the flute-player floats weightlessly through the air. And so the effective manager uses his whole knowledge, experience and power of through like the sword or brush. He sees everything clearly and catches the essence of a situation, and can define it like the artist. And he communication like the flute

The secret of nourishing life

Less warlike than the sword is the butcher’s knife, and a delightful description comes to us from the earl Chinese Taoist philosopher Chuang TZU:

Cook ting was Cutting up an ox for Lord When- Hui. At every touch of his hand, every thrust of his knee- zip! Zoop! He slithered the knife along with a zing and all was in perfect rhythm, as though he were performing the dance of the Mulberry Grove or keeping time to the ching-shou music.

‘Ah, this is marvelous,’ said Lord When-Hui, ‘imagine skill reaching such highest!’

Cook Ting laid down his knife and replied, ‘What I care about it the way which goes beyond skill. When I first began cutting up oxen, all I could see was the ox itself. After three years I no longer saw the whole ox. And now- I go at it with spirit and don’t look with my eyes. Perception and understanding have come to a stop and spirit moves where it wants. I go along with the natural make- up, strike in the big hollows, guide the knife through the big openings, and follow things as they are. So I never touch the smallest ligament or tendon, much less a main joint.

A good cook changes his knife once a year- because he cuts. A mediocre cook chages his knife once a month because he hacks.’ I have had this knife of mine for nineteen years and I have cut up thousands of oxen with it, and yet the blade is as good as through it had just come from the grindstone. There are spaces between the joints, and the blade of the knife realy has no thickness. If you insert what has no thickness into such spaces, then there’s plenty of room more than enough for th blade to play about it. That’s, why

WHAT PREVENT US FROM BEING EFFECTIVE?

Lord Wen Hui's final comment Cook ting may have struck as a tittle odd. How can a butcher be said to be 'nourishing life? Kuang wu explains that not only did the cook feed Lord Wen Hui with the result of his act (food for physically) but also fed him with the words of his act (food for life nourishment). And the act is that of the body bloody undoing of an OX!

THE WAY OF EFFECTIVENESS

That’s, why

The real question for us here is, why are we not as effective as Cook Ting? Why Are we 'mediocre cooks' whose knives get blunt, or just 'good cooks' for whom the only way is to keep finding new recipes?
