Taking the LARE Exam for Landscape Architect Registration

Updated on January 21, 2012

The Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB) administers the LARE exam (Landscape Architect Registration Examination). Individual states use the LARE as a licensing exam for landscape architects. Candidates should learn how to effectively prepare for the exam so they can get their locally required landscape architecture license.

Aspiring licensees in this field should start out by accessing the LARE Content Guide. This guide has an explanation of the test format and also gives a detailed LARE exam content outline. It will show you what topics you need to master to pass the Landscape Architect Registration Exam.

Test takers should also read the LARE Orientation Guide, which includes the LARE Reference Manual. The guide explains all about the exam, and the Reference Manual is important because it contains the design standards and zoning code for the graphical portion of the LARE test.

The LARE exam reference list is going to be your bread-and-butter list of textbook resources for actually studying for the exam. You may have encountered some of these texts in your landscape-architecture education or work experience. These are vital, as merely doing practice questions is only going to slightly raise your LARE score. This list is subject to change at any time, but there are 18 references on the list, as of August 2011. There is a link to order most of the reference books online if you do not have them.

After studying with the reference books, you can then move on to some LARE practice questions. There are 3 practice tests sold by CLARB and testing contractor Prometric. Each is $60 and corresponds to one of the 3 multiple-choice portions of this landscape-architecture licensing exam.

Finally, there are some free practice tools for the graphic portion of the LARE. You may access these at the American Society of Landscape Architects website. Look for the sample vignettes to take these practice tests.
