Target - $100 A Month By End 2011 - Target Achieved Sep 2011
Setting a Monthly Earnings Target
When I first started off trying to earn money online I did not really know what to expect (apart from great wealth very quickly lol!) but I was blindsided into thinking that i would quickly be able to earn enough money to at least pay a big chunk of my bills within a few months. I think this happens to a lot of people who first get into either affiliate marketing or earning money online by writing when they first see the prospect of what they could do.
I started by attending a seminar on affiliate marketing in Dubai in January 2010 and I was very excited about the possibilities of just putting out some pay per click adverts and raking in the money. Obviously anyone who has been through this stage knows it is not as simple as that to get some money coming in but when they sell it to you on the first go it all seems very plausible!
One thing I did learn though in those first few months was that (and this does not necessarily apply only to making money online but also to other areas of your life) in order to achieve anything you need to set the target so that you know what you want to achieve.
The second thing that I learned (although as a mathematician and self-professed spreadsheet queen this was pretty much already ingrained) was to keep track of what you were earning/selling or whatever your target was, so that you could actually realise how close to your target you were. This may seem simple but I know people who run small craft businesses but they don't keep proper accounts and so they don't even know if they are making a profit or losing money.
Setting a Realistic Target For Me
I class myself as a realist (some may say pessimist) and so I wanted to set myself a target for monthly earnings that was realistic. ideally I wanted to earn $500 a month by the end of 2011 but I felt that from a starting point of about $10 a month that was not a realistic target. I should mention at this point that my target setting was done in June 2011 when I knew I wanted to ramp up my online earnings and had some thoughts of how to do so.
So I decided to set what I thought was a realistic target of $100 a month by the end of 2011. This income would come from a few sources but primarily from
I also have accounts with ClickBank and Commission Junction but I have not been concentrating on promoting products from these recently as I feel right now that Clickbank products have a slightly tarnished reputation and I only wanted to sell things that I knew people would appreciate when they bought and with regards to Commission Junction, I found that a lot of the products that I promoted were sold at Amazon and people tend to trust Amazon when they buy things.
Hubpages Ad Program
When the hubpages Ad program was introduced earlier this year turned it on immediately to see if I could earn more money from that than I could from Adsense. As payout from HPAds is at $50 I figured that I would at least try and get the earnings to that (and get paid) before switching back to Adsense only if I felt that I wasn't earning enough.
As it is I think I will switch back to adsense next month as my CPM on HP Ads does not seem to be that high right now. I have had a few days of good CPM but mostly it has slipped recently. I think that may be because a lot of my hubs are aimed at non-US audiences and so there may not be a big call for HP Ads there.
In June/July 2011 I started up some informational websites aimed at adsense earnings. I chose topics that I was interested in and knew a fair bit about so that I could share some original knowledge on these websites. So far I have about a dozen of these, 2 of which I would consider are doing really well, about 8 of them need some TLC and a couple of them still need some big work being done on them. I also bought a site on Flippa which was supposed to give me earnings of $80 a month and which has since died, lesson learned!
Added to the websites I have, I also get some adsense earnings from Hubpages as they also show with the HP Ads and I have another small Hubpages account that is adsense only.
Amazon Affiliate Accounts
I have Amazon affiliate accounts for the US and the UK and I use the Amazon links in my Hubpages articles, on my websites and also on my facebook page.
When I first started writing hubs I would add random Amazon capsules to hubs with related products but now I focus more on actually making a hub about an Amazon product or group of products. I try to pick niche topics and Amazon products that cost $100 or more and products that I have used or know something about. i have a couple of hubs like this that are starting to do quite well, particularly after the recent upsurge in views at the end of August.
$100 Target Reached
So, the reason for this hub is that on 24th September 2011, I reached my target of $100 per month (well for this month anyway!) and my figures are as follows:
How I Got to $100 per Month
Well I didn't think it would be much use to write this hub and not try and figure out how I got to $100 so that I could maybe help others to reach this target too. For some they will already be beyond this target but I know that there must be a lot of people out there who are starting out towards that kind of target so these are the main things I do:
- I do use Google adwords keywords tool for the majority of my writing and try and find low competition phrases
- If i find a very specific phrase that says it has no searches then I do not get put off by this and try it out for myself
- I do try and backlink all of my hubs at least a few times using some backlink tools like the ones listed in my profile
- Creating niche websites for adsense is worth a hub in itself but the main key factors are to get a good domain name (.com if possible with your main keyword although this can be tough) and create original content plus some backlinking. My best website is not extensively backlinked but it is a topic that not may people know about or would write about. Give websites at least 6 months to start maturing.
- Create Amazon hubs that are specific and with products that people would not necessarily feel they have to try out before they buy. Also try and concentrate on products that will earn you more than a dollar or two. If you can sell 7 Amazon items a month then your commission increases from 4% to 6% (on some products) which can actually add 50% to your earnings.
Things I Still Need to Do
There is a large amount of scope to increase my hub views as I know that they are quite low compared to many other people - at present I am averaging around 300 views a day. So I need to concentrate on improving my hubs and getting them up higher in the rankings.
I am also lacking in followers and I believe that the reason for this right now is that for the last few months I have been concentrating on money making hubs (as I am in desperate need of some income right now!) and I only intersperse these with hubs that might be interesting to other hubbers - i guess until i make some good money, unlike some hubbers I have seen I am not going to preach about how to make money on Hubpages until I have actually made some! i do write articles about my painting which I believe people find interesting ad I will write more on those, but I think my writing is quite diverse and so may not appeal to all hubbers.
Anyway, I hope that you have found something interesting in here that you can apply to making more money.
As for me, a target of £100 for October is on the cards and then $200 in December.
