The Best Ways to Make Money Playing Video Games

Updated on October 28, 2012

Have you ever been playing a video game and thought " wow I'm so good at this I should get paid" or have you even just played the hell out of a game and are tired of it but want to get some monetary reward for your time, well it is completely possible to get money from playing online games, and anyone can do it.

MLG:

Some kids have dreamed for their wholes lives to have the ability to play video games for a living, and it can be done, but it requires a lot of time and dedication, so unless your really committed you'll never go pro, but if your willing to put in the time and effort, going MLG can be done. The first thing you want to do is find a game that you find fun and are really, really good at. Usually it takes a few years of just playing games in general to be good at all generic games, and by that time you'll start to have found a game that you just seem to do better than then every body else (The biggest MLG are starcraft, halo, and call of duty, so if you can focus and look up video tutorials on how to be better at those games, because they pay the most). Your then going to want to focus you time almost exclusively on that game and find a group of individuals who are as good as you if not better, so you can practice strategies with them for tournaments to improve you win rate. Once you and your team start to win games and tournaments at a nearly consistent rate, you'll want to join game battles, which is where the top teams are selected to play at the MLG level, and from then on all you'll have to do is perfect your game with your team, and when you guys win tournaments, you can collect the prize money. The major faults with going MLG are; that most of the kids who try to go pro can't, either form skill or lack of motivation, the amount of time it takes to practice makes it nearly impossible to excel at school or sports, and the worst is that if you go MLG, you could realize at 30 that you should have probably dedicated your time to getting a degree that you can actually use for the rest of your life. But still, if video games are your absolute passion, have fun!

Selling Items/Accounts:

What I personally believe to be the best option for making money is to either sell in-game items and currency or actually build up and sell max level accounts. The most common games to do this are obviously the largest games, because they have the most potential buyers/demand, such as WoW, Eve online, Rift, and Guild Wars 2.This plan works out much better if you are somebody who actually plays games for fun, but then soon will move on to a new game, or if your somebody who has a talent for getting to max level the fastest. If your the former, then you can enjoy your game, and you may actually be able to not lose any money or even make a bit more than you paid for it originally, making it a net victory. IF your the latter you'll have an even much better time, say a game costs 60$ up front and it costs 15$ a month, and you can get a max level character within 2 months of play. If you sell that character for 300$, which is even a little bit on the low side, you still make more than 200$. So if you sell five accounts in a year, or if your crazy and could sell five max level accounts in the summer, you can easily make north of 1000$, just from playing video games. The best thing about it is how thier is no long term commitment, so if you want to play a game with your friends and you guys play a lot in the first few months but then you get tired of it, you can sell your account and maybe be able to finance your next gaming adventure. If you actually really like a game and want to keep playing it but your having trouble with paying the reoccurring subscription, then you can sell some of your accumulated wealth and depending on what game, more popular=more money, you can pay your way through the game. All and all, it's a pretty nice way to get some of your money back after you get bored playing a game or if you don't want to find a part time job, this works just as well if not better. If your looking to sell your account or in-game currency, look up websites that offer to buy or sell accounts/ gold, because if a website is selling an account, they probably have to buy it off of a real person.

You might caution people about selling accounts as I am pretty sure that it is against some MMO's rules and could potentially get the seller in trouble. Whether those rules are ever really enforced I do not know. Interesting article though.
