The Greenest Business in Puerto Rico and Possibly the Nation

A Gringo who moved to Puerto Rico, Greg loves writing about the island he now resides on. He and Maria also wrote several bilingual books...

My wife, Lastheart and I have put together some English/Spanish books on pueblos of Puerto Rico. Our first one was on the pueblo of Río Grande where the El Yunque rainforest is located. To help in the production and costs of putting these books together, we have offered a small amount of advertising space within.

We have been very choosy in who is allowed to advertise and when we met the man pictured at the right and his wife, we felt a pride and enjoyment to have their business on the front cover. Their business is named Farmacia Sally or in English, The Sally Pharmacy.

Why the pride you ask?

Well Farmacia Sally isn't just any old pharmacy. This couple had a dream and a vision and they have carried it through.

Farmacia Sally is the "greenest" business in Puerto Rico and there is a good chance they may be the "greenest" in the whole United States.

There is an Amazon ad for the book at the right.

Now let me explain how Jesus and his wife built such a "green" business.

The Vision

Jesus and his wife owned the original pharmacy in Luquillo, Puerto Rico. As the world has started seeking a "greener" way of living, through much prayer they decided to build at another location and completely in "green".

The ideas were established and put on paper and the banks were called. This whole project would need financing and one Puerto Rico bank agreed to support this endeavor. Let's all give a big thumbs up to ScotiaBank that came up with the capital to finance this.

In the design phase, the Green Building Council of America has called the building golden. The highest rating they give.

Now let us look how Farmacia Sally is so "green".

Building Material

Puerto Rico is in a hurricane alley and buildings need to be constructed with that in mind. You will find very few wood construction; the majority of buildings are concrete.

In many cases, regular concrete and concrete blocks are not very energy efficient. Jesus and his architect decided on a new product that is called Concretek. It is an insulated concrete product that is lighter and much more efficient than concrete blocks. It is concrete faces with foam insulation and metal grates making it quite strong.

This was the main building and a link to the material is below.

All the lighting in Farmacia Sally is with a SolarTube system.

Light is collected in solar tubes and there is also a special glass roof that allows the light, but not the heat. The collected light is stored for night or cloudy day use. They use a special fiber optic system that transports the stored light from the roof to the first floor.

It is healthier than regular electric bulbs and is saving on electric bills. The initial start-up cost was high, but it will pay itself off very soon.

Outside lighting is through Photoelectric cells that save tons of electricity and are much safer for the environment.

When we entered Farmacia Sally, it was a perfect temperature. The air conditioning is all high efficiency and low electric usage. The system is all computer controlled and keeps the temperature at an optimum level to keep humans their happiest.

I noticed the employees all had smiles and seemed in comfort. It always makes a difference when you work in an environment that is not too cold or hot.

Waste Water

A major problem in the world today is what to do with waste and waste water.

Through a special system, all the waste water from the septic system feeds the green areas and gardens on the property. It is a natural fertilizer that every one should be using. If done properly, this water will never enter drinking water wells. The plants will drink it and will supply us the oxygen we need to survive.

Farmacia Sally also has special tanks that collect the rainwater that is used in the high efficiency toilets. This water is not consumed, but it sure doesn't hurt to "flush" with it.

Other "Green" Attributes

The concrete floor in the pharmacy is worn to a natural stone look and a special, natural dye is used for coloring. No chemically made paints and solvents; all natural.

It is the same with the wall colors. The paints used are from natural instead of man made.

When we enter Farmacia Sally, we feel happy. No breathing chemicals and cancer causing emissions.

I give a big applause to Jesus and his wife for doing their part in making a "green" world. I am happy and proud that their business is on the front cover of our book and I pray that their business will jump with leaps and bounds.

Please visit Farmacia Sally just off the Puerto Rico #3 in Río Grande, Puerto Rico. It is very close to the border of Luquillo and is on the North side of the road.

It is people and businesses like theirs that will make the Earth a better place to live for our children and grandchildren.

Sounds like this company is pretty smart! We are a country of huge waste of our natural resources; we should take some lessons from this business. More and more of our homes and businesses are using solar energy and I'm glad to see that.

Great Hub, very interesting. I voted it UP, etc.

BTW: I still miss Puerto Rico!
