The Impact of Instantaneous Communication on Businesses

In today’s day in age, businesses are constantly and rapidly changing due to the growth of technology. The evolution of technology will continue to change due to the demand from businesses expecting faster and better ways to communicate. The current direction in which businesses are expanding is in their use of phones and computers.

Phones and computers are changing businesses because they allow for instantaneous communication throughout the world. Companies are allowing their employees to receive top of the line technology in hopes of increasing productivity and communication. Currently, technology allows employees to connect and carry on a business relationship without ever meeting face to face (Effects). Now, people from different corners of the world are able to interact with a company on the other side of the world. This creates a more versatile industry, connecting companies and people better than previously done.

Technology has benefitted communication making it immediate, but it comes with a drawback. It has made planning deliberate communication periods more significant. Companies that are taking advantage of telecommuting and virtual offices need to intentionally plan to communicate with individuals in groups to avoid employees trailing behind on work or losing touch. Companies also want to make sure all are working toward the same goals. Instantaneous communication in reference to quick conclusions and memos cannot replace precise communication times where big decisions are discussed and progress reports given (Effects). However, when employees are communicating in numerous ways every day, it can be easy to forget to schedule and actually have everyone attend these sort of meetings.

In this century, Microsoft developed an instant-messaging client used for business, Skype for Business. Skype for Business has different features than Skype that target businesses. It includes instant messaging, voice over IP, video conferencing, sharing files and more. It is also synced with Microsoft Office allowing others to see who is working on the same document. It is one of the most used software in the United States. However, Skype for Business did not become this vital business tool in a night. Skype for Business originally started out as Office Communicator back in 2007 (At the Heart). Since then, Microsoft has released three different successors to Office Communicator giving us Skype for Business. They are constantly improving their technology allowing companies to improve as well. This past September, Microsoft announced that Microsoft Teams would replace Skype for Business in the near future (At the Heart). No company ever settles. They always want to be the best in their industry, and Microsoft is one of them. They are still creating new successors to their instant-messaging client to improve communication.

Skype for Business appears to not have a flaw when in reality, advancement in communication leads to advancement in distraction. Employees are starting to abuse the power of communication and use it improperly. From constant emails to loud cell phone conversations, instant communication can make it harder for workers to deal with one task at a time when their work is being interrupted with comments and questions that relate to other projects or even personal issues. Some employees go the distance and turn of their communicating devices while they work to ensure those distractions will not occur so they can meet deadlines.

There is another difficulty that relates to searching for the boundaries of a software industrial segment. Publishers and developers of software for the personal computers are finding wide applications software for large computer systems. A substantial fraction of the business of the major computer companies, IBM and DEC, is in software. However, these companies are habitually regarded, and possibly regard themselves, as hardware companies (Read). Despite the difficulties we may have in defining software industrial sector, software and associated software technologies are playing a larger and larger role in other industries as time progresses. So, there is this well-known importance of software technology and in its related advances as they shake and stimulate the global economy.

Advancement in technology is as inevitable as death and paying taxes. It will always happen, and business need to use this asset to improve their company’s focal points. More importantly, advance technology will help with communication. Greater communication within a company leads to a higher margin of profit. This allows for a greater net income due to the technology creating the capacity to generate revenue.
