The Q Word: Quiet
The Q Word
It has been quiet. Yes I said the Q word! I will put it out there and shout it to the universe. Hopefully it will stay that way. Ya that’s it. Stick a positive word in there instead of the negative and see what you get. Hope it works. For all you lay people out there, the word quiet is usually a bad thing to say out loud in the nursing world (at least the world that I work in). If things get hairy you get the blame because you said "quiet".
This Weeks Menu Discussion
We have been discussing menu’s for next week. You see we all work the weekend program in the facility that we work for. We just work the weekend so that we can be home during the week.
My coworkers all know how to cook. I could probably cook if I actually tried. I have never baked a cake that I didn’t scorch on the bottom. My husband always says if you smell smoke then dinner is ready. This weekend we brought goodies from home. No offense but the cafeteria here sucks. The food is terrible and expensive. Plus everthing tastes the same, and they give you teeny tiny portions.
My forte in the culinary world is knowing where to find goodies. If you want to know where to get the best rolls, just ask me. So I brought the store bought (ha, that sounds funny doesn’t it). My other coworker brought a made from scratch red velvet cake and homemade baked beans (show off).
A Glamorous Job
A glamorous job this is. In the facility where I work nurses must wear white except in surgery and some other areas where they wear hospital scrubs. Uniforms are expensive and if you want to wear something cute you are going to pay more. There is only one reputable medical uniform shop in the area otherwise you must order from a catalog or internet. There is not much to choose from when you have to wear white.
White uniforms turn either grey or yellow with about two months washing. They turn yellow if you try to bleach them. They turn grey if you just wash them without bleach. We have to change into hospital scrubs sometimes…just imagine if someone throws up on you. Sometimes I wish we could wear colorful uniforms. The thing with a nurse wearing white is that you look like a nurse. I see lots of people out and about wearing scrubs. Are they healthcare professionals? My neighbor wears scrubs to clean other people’s houses. I dare say not too many cleaning ladies wear white scrubs.
Yesterday I was loading trays onto the dinner cart. I had two plates stacked on top of each other and they crashed to the floor and shattered. I work in ICU so all the pods are attached to one main entrance area. Everyone stopped to look and started laughing. It was either hide in shame or take it….so I took a theatrical bow and a curtsy. Of course, some smarty pants came over this afternoon wondering if I was going to be breaking any plates today. I told smarty pants; ”The day wasn’t over and full of possibilities; do you want me to give you some pointers in case you want to try it yourself”. All in good fun. We love to banter around here.
Humor is important. A good laugh always lifts the spirits and makes the day more positive. A day without a good laugh is not a good day at all.
