The Truth About Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. Uncovered

Updated on February 2, 2011

There is much written about Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. Both bad, and good......

The first thing you will notice about this page is that there are NO ads. You will also notice that I do not include any links to any sites I own or am affiliated with in any way, and therefore there is no profit for myself in writing this article. I simply want the truth to be my own words. There are many who seek to take advantage of the nativity of people's gullibility, simply writing whatever someone is likely to believe thereby increasing traffic to their page resulting in an increase in income.

All commissions are paid for memberships sold. It is true that commission raises can be achieved faster through recruitment, however, sponsoring an associate without said associate purchasing a membership will always result in no commission.

As far as canceling your membership, I actually canceled my own several years prior to becoming and associate due to financial hardships. After a phone call to customer service at  800-654-7757 I was told that my account would be placed on hold and a cancellation form would be mailed to me. Four days later it arrived. In order to cancel, I was required to sign a waiver stating that effective immediately my membership would be canceled. I was confused at first, however after considering it, I realized that, for example, If I or my wife had canceled the membership over the phone, and then later I was involved in an accident, resulting in the death of the other party, and charged with manslaughter, I could argue that I had not canceled the membership, or that my wife didn't have the authority to, or that I had changed my mind. It's a very serious matter, and the corporate office takes it seriously. You must sign a waiver releasing Pre-Paid Legal Inc. from your defense in any legal/identity theft situation for liability purposes.

Regarding the chargebacks. Pre-Paid Legal Inc. essentially offers legal insurance. Since it is a form of insurance (some states you must be licensed to even market the plans) it operates much like health insurance plans. I worked with a health insurance company for a number of years and we followed a similar commissions plan. We were paid a year in advance, if the member canceled prior, we were liable for the money given upfront. Tell the hospital my health insurance provider is a scam after they received a 50,000+ dollar payment for my motorcycle accident. Also regarding the chargebacks, any associate has the right at any time to change their commissions to "As Earned" by contacting Marketing Services at 1-580-436-7424  As-earned means you get paid your commissions by the month, you get paid as the member pays their membership, resulting in NO chargebacks. As an example, if you are a Senior Associate, you will be paid 8.40 (100 / 12) per month for a year or until the member cancels.

This hub will be updated soon.

      Hey, thanks for your question.

I started this hub because there are many people who don't understand how PPL works and confuse it for a scam. There is one Hubpagger in particular who makes a LOT of money through ad's by telling this lie. That being said, here's your answer:

Pre-Paid Legal Services Inc. works much like any regular insurance company: You pay your monthly premium, between 10-36 dollars a month, depending on your coverage, and you get 24/7 telephone access to a law firm in YOUR STATE. The great thing about this membership is it works nation-wide. If you're traveling out of state, for example, I live in KY and I go to visit California, and I receive, as and example, a speeding ticket, I call my KY law firm who forwards it to the CA one and they show up in court to represent me---all at no extra cost to me!

      It's truly an amazing service.

There are five (5) areas of coverage, called "Titles". Preventive Legal Services

      Contract and Document Review...

You can have an unlimited number of personal legal documents, up to ten pages each, reviewed by your Provider Lawyer. Included each year is one business document review at no additional cost! Your Provider Lawyer will analyze the documents and suggest changes for your benefit before you sign.

I am kind of confused. I started reading this hub because I was interested in how pre-paid legal works for those who cannot afford attorney fees and such. But that is not the information I obtained from the hub. I am interested to know what EXACTLY it is about. I have heard of pre-paid legal services but never about making any money with it. I am confused can you clarify it for me?

@ Mickey: Thank you sir, for your thoughtful input! It is true that the company does have a lot of third-party credibility. It's sad that so many are deceived and would rather try something easier (that IS a scam) and quit Pre-Paid Legal because they feel it's too much work.

What makes this company so amazing is the 3rd Party Credibility. I find it puzziling when I hear people say it's a scam. If that were true then it has to be one of the oldest and greatest scams in the world because they've snowed 2500 plus Law Firms, Attorney Generals across the US, State Insurance Commissioners, The Presidents of the US and National Black Chamber of Commerce, Forbes, Fortune, Money, Black Enterprise, Investors Weekly, The Motley Fool and not to Mention the New York Stock Exchange.

So uhhh yeah, none of those above are smart enough to sniff out a scam in 38 years......Anyone who says that about Pre-Paid Legal are the same one's that would by Beach Front Property in Arizona.

Long story short, my mentors taught me that 'If you buy someone's opinion, you buy their lifestyle' So next time you hear someone say something is a scam, not withstanding Pre-Paid Legal, ask yourself this question:

Does this person making that statement have the lifestyle I've always dreamed of in every area of life and are they going to walk me hand in hand and teach me to have my dream lifestyle?' If the answer is NO then ask yourself why you're listening to them.

Be smart, look for Credible, respected sources of information on anything so you can come to your own conclusions.

@MichelleHarding: I totally agree. I've already been saved from one lawsuit using my membership. That incident alone effectively paid for my membership for 6 years.

@Total Dork: Yes, it is common-sense for companies to buy their own stock. If you're the CEO of a company, you're going to want to own the majority of it.

@Sweetiepie: The BBB website is an excellent CREDIBLE source, which may be viewed here:
