10. Bechtel Group Inc., San Francisco, CA

Bechtel Corporation (Bechtel Group) is the largest construction and civil engineering firm in America. It is the fourth-largest privately owned company in the country too. Bechtel headquarters are conveniently located in the South of Market, San Francisco.

Some of the major works that the company has completed include the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, the Trans Mountain Pipeline in Canada. Bechtel has worked on major airports in Saudi Arabia and the project management of the Los Angeles Summer Olympics in 1984. The metro rail in Washington D.C. was also finished by Bechtel.

There are two projects that are due to be completed by Bechtel in 2016. They include the new Muscat International Airport terminal and the Transylvania Motorway.

Projects that are in the pipeline are the Riyadh Metro.

This company was established in 1950 and has expanded constantly on a geographical scale. This has helped it push ahead in an industry that is very cyclical in nature. In the first few years, Centex Construction Group focused a lot on improving its business in Texas and then successfully move beyond the state in the 1980s.

6. Turner Construction, New York City, NY

Turner Construction is a subsidiary of the German company Hochtief and is one of the largest construction companies in the US with yearly volumes exceeding $10 billion. It had its beginnings in 1902 when start-up capital of $25,000 was used by Henry Chandlee Turner to found the firm.

Turner handles as many as 1,500 projects per year. There are 46 offices in the US and many more in 20 countries across the globe. Turner has earned fame as a "Green Contractor" and the Engineering News-Record named it the largest such firm in 2014.

Turner Construction has worked on Yankee Stadium in New York City and Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.


5. Halliburton, Houston, TX

Halliburton has been in the media spotlight because of its ties to former U.S. President Dick Cheney. Cheney received a severance package of $36 million after he retired from the company during the U.S. presidential election of 2000.

Halliburton is regarded as one of the largest providers of services to petroleum and energy firms in the world.

This company has a long history having been in operating since 1884 and is the top resource when it comes to construction and mining. It is based in Omaha, Nebraska and is famously employee-owned and is one of the Fortune 500 companies.

This company focuses a lot on infrastructure, mining, power, industrial/process, energy and environment. The URS Corporation based in San Francisco acquired Washington Group International for $3.1 billion in November 2007.

Dennis R. Washington founded the company in 1964 in Missoula, Montana.

2. J.A. Jones Construction, Charlotte, NC
