Industry Growth Trends

Seattle is known for software titans like Microsoft and online sales giant Amazon. Located in Puget Sound below British Columbia, its outdoor industries and tourism have steadily expanded for decades. This includes First Nations reserves and wedding destinations in Washington and on nearby Vancouver Island.

The state labor agency reported that the Seattle metro area increased jobs by 9% from 2006 - 2007 and again in the summer of 2009. Job listings doubled by June 2009 and tripled that increased number by June 2013. Job vacancies continued to grow in 2018, with approximately 75,000 openings within a 40-mile radius.

Largest industries are successful in software and information technology, aerospace manufacturing and services, sales, healthcare, and tourism.

Seattle is famously known for information technology companies and aerospace corporations, and is a former World's Fair site, held in 1962.

Dramatic Job Increases

During late 2007 through 2009, the number of jobs actually posted for the Greater Seattle Area was doubled over the number found in June of 2009. Jobs advertised also tripled from 2009 through 2013, while job listings continued to increase through early 2018.

Major hiring companies since 2015 include Gordon Trucking, truck driving positions multiplying and increasing in demand through 2018 across America.

Safeway grocery jobs also increased, as did those at the University of Washington Medicl Center, AFLAC insurance, Care.com, Amazon.com (with a new spike in 2018 becuase of expansion) Nordstrom, Advantage Sales & Marketing, and Pizza Hut.
