Ways to make money writing on

Updated on December 13, 2010

What is is a website that pays it's contributors for articles that they post on the site.  It's "Where Knowledge Rules".  Contributing writers have an opportunity to write to virtually any and every topic ranging from personal finance to style and beauty.  Although the revenue potential varies depending on the popularity of the article, writers to the site can earn anywhere from a few pennies a day upwards to hundreds a day adding up to thousands a month.  Helium does not promise to make any one person a millionaire, especially not overnight, however, with a lot of hard work, there is much potential to earn money on the site.

Where to start

Naturally, the best starting point for earning money on Helium is to write an article, but, the process has a little more involved that "just writing" an article.  Titles that have more than one article in it are rated by other Helium contributors, therefore, it is in the best interest of the writer to only post articles that they are confident in.  The higher the article is ranked usually indicates that it will make more money than all other articles under that particular title.

Ways to earn Money with Helium

There are several ways to earn money on Helium.  These ways being through the Marketplace, through residual income, and through contests.

The Marketplace is where the "big money" can be found on Helium because articles written in the Marketplace can earn writers up to $200 per article.  Articles that rake in those larger amounts are paid for and sought after by publishers looking for material for their own ventures.  These articles can be very competitive and should only have articles written to that or researched extremely well and and are extremely high in quality.  There is no payout for Marketplace that are not accepted by the publisher, but the risk is worth the reward.

Another way to make money through Helium's Marketplace is by writing to titles that Helium has placed in its own Marketplace.  These articles usually have a payout ranging from $2-$15 for the best article submitted with other articles submitted receiving a lesser amount.  Once the Marketplace title has closed, the articles submitted will transition to Helium's regular site and will begin to earn residual income.  Two important things that writers must keep in mind when submitting articles to Helium through the Marketplace is that articles submitted will become exclusive to Helium, and can not be reproduced any where else.  Also, Marketplace titles are expected to earn writers more money in the long run because the titles have high SEO appeal.

Residual income in big plus on Helium that some other writing sites do not offer.  Just as Marketplace titles that have transitioned to Helium's regular website earn residual income, so do articles that are currently on the site.  Although the upfront payment is not offered, with proper promotion, all articles have the opportunity to rake in some cash.

Helium's contests are competitive just as the Marketplace, and once the contests end, all articles submitted will transition the the regular site and earn residual income.  Contests run for two weeks featuring articles beginning and ending on Wednesdays.  Titles offered in contests are usually relevant to the time of year or other relevant news.  The first place winner of each contest usually earns $50, second place $30, and third place $10, however the prizes in each different contest can vary.

Why rating is important at Helium

Just as writing is important in the Helium community, rating is as well.  Submitted articles to the site are rated by other contributors, most of which take writing themselves very seriously, so will not rate a poor quality article well.  There are different star levels given to raters, and a minimum of one star must be earned in order to receive payment at Helium.  By earning five star, contributors are given an extra $3 at the end of the month.  That $3 may not seem like a lot, but it may help with making payout at the end of the month.

Other Important Facts

1. Helium pays its members twice a month

2. The minimum payout it $25

3. There are certain criteria that must be achieved to write at some Marketplace titles, so it is best to see what they are prior to writing or gathering ideas for a particular article
