What is Content Syndication?

Content Syndication is a fairly new and quite often misunderstood concept. Understand it and you will discover a unique tool directly linked to the explosion of online social network that will expose your blog, increase your page rank and generate traffic to your blog posts.

To understand the underlying benefits of content syndication, let first look at the definition of syndication. Syndication is defined as follow:

“Syndication is the act or process of syndicating” where syndicating is “to publish simultaneously, or supply for simultaneous publication, in a number of newspapers or other periodicals in different places: Her column is syndicated in 120 papers.” (

Up till recently, the term syndication was more used as reference to newspaper or television (traditional media), but with the explosion of internet, syndication is more commonly known as RSS -Really Simple Syndication- and Wikipedia defines it as follow:

RSS (most commonly translated as "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader", or "aggregator", which can be web-based, desktop-based, or mobile-device-based. A standardized XML file format allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. The user subscribes to a feed by entering into the reader the feed's URI – often referred to informally as a "URL" (uniform resource locator), although technically the two terms are not exactly synonymous – or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds."

If you have been working as an internet marketer, you know the power of the famous orange icon and you are probably using some RSS feed to make sure your blog content is widely read and followed.

Now, that you know the meaning of syndication, you should know that the same concept can be applied to your content. What you need is a network of people that are using social media and use these networks to syndicate your content. A few months ago, thanks to Charles Heflin and Thomas Rozof I discovered the power of content syndication and now use is to to exponentially increase my internet exposure.

What does it means? Simply, you syndicate other people work and expect in return for them to do the same. There is an underwritten law in Social Media whereby if you are active, share and promote other work, in turn they will do it for you. The basic for such a system to work is not to syndicate whatever comes up just because someone else did you a favor. The concept is to syndicate quality and relevant content, content that brings up valuable information. You want to syndicate good blog content because you are building an image of a reliable person, the profile of someone that has the knowledge on his niche market, someone that knows what he is speaking about, someone who is an expert. You want to use content syndication to establish yourself as a reliable and powerful leader, not as a spammer.

The result, for each post I publish, I submitted it to my social media network. People in my network will then syndicate the content via social network such as Digg, Reddit, Social Median ... and bookmarking sites such as Delicious, Stumble Upon. In exchange I will do the same for relevant and good content. The process is called Content Syndication or article syndication, where you create a content syndication network that will distribute and expose your content within social networks.

Content Syndication, if used properly, is a form of RSS that will tape directly into social network or social bookmarking, expose you work, increase your page rank and generate traffic to your blog. Content Syndication is new, and few internet marketers understand its power. You can do it manually or use some exsiting content syndication networks .       What about content syndication by paying for the already published contents on your site? You need quality content for your site to engage audience and so the idea perhaps makes sense. Constant Content ( calls it Buy Usage under which 'members may acquire, for a fee fixed by the Author, a revocable, royalty-free, non-transferable, non-exclusive and non-assignable license to publish (but not to modify) the Works on a single website or in a single edition of a print publication owed by that Member.'
