What Is Social Media Really Meant For?
What Is Social Media Meant For?
Everyone and their dog is a part of social media in some way, literally. Social Media is limitless or at least it feels that way with everything that it offers. If you are not a part of social media you are missing out. At least that is what it seems. What is social media and why did it come about? These are the questions people ask when it comes to deciding if they want to be a part of social media.
What I am going to be focusing on when it comes to social media in this hub are Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. What are these three platforms meant for? Are they being used properly? Let’s investigate first of all I am going to look at Facebook and give a little bit of background on it.
Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg a student at Harvard University. Facebook was originally called "The Facebook" and was launched in 2004 at Harvard University. A year later it was noticed by Boston University. In 2005 United States high schools could sign up and use it. As of 2006, the site was extended beyond educational institutions to anyone with a registered email address. So who was it meant for originally? College students to keep in contact, with each other about school work and things that were going on in their lives. It was originally for college kids to keep in contact with each other. It wasn’t for high school kids, although a year later it was introduced to them which was a good thing because they could get a head start on using the social media that would help with college and university purposes later on.
Now everyone has Facebook, from your grandmother to your aunts and uncles to your parents. I can understand kids in high school and college having it, using it to keep in touch with their friends so that they can ask for help on homework if they need it or if they miss something there friends can post it on Facebook for everyone that missed the lesson. It was meant for students, to keep up with the assignments that they missed in class and their friends. It wasn’t meant for what it is used to for now.
As years progressed, it has become a site for everyone. The purpose of the site, in the beginning, is not there anymore. It’s nice to have family on Facebook don’t get me wrong but with that, what Facebook is meant for has now changed. People are now using Facebook to tell the world what they are doing every moment of the day, and that was not its intention. I am a victim of telling the world on Facebook what I was doing throughout the day when I first got it but now that has stopped. Now there are more young people on the site and more adults.
Again I am going to ask what Facebook is really meant for. Sure it is social media it is for young people to keep in touch with their friends and family who live far away. It is not for people to just post random things that don’t make any sense. I have been on Facebook since 2007 and through that time, I have noticed a change in myself, now that you can go back to when you started on Facebook and see what you posted and what your friends posted on your wall. I know that I started using Facebook at a very young age, and I used it for the wrong reasons in the beginning but now I have changed and I am only using it to keep in touch with friends and family I don’t see often and to let people know about my blogs, I hardly ever post statuses anymore. It is just too time-consuming and a bit of a pain.
Facebook is not meant to tell people what you are doing every second of the day. Nobody needs to know that, it is meant for things like telling people the highlights of your day, rather than a breakdown of it. For example, there is a number of fitness coaches on Facebook they use Facebook as a tool, rather than just to keep in touch with friends, which is what it was meant for.
Facebook was put together to be used as a tool, to keep people together rather than separate them. Is Facebook being used for that, though? It was the beginning but now Facebook has turned into let’s tell everyone everything rather than use it to keep in contact with friends. Does everyone need to know everything, right? No everyone doesn’t need to know everything and that is why I changed the way that I use it, I only post a status if it’s absolutely necessary, I now use it as a tool to promote my blog. That is what it was meant for so why not use it for that purpose.
Facebook has lost its purpose in a sense, wouldn’t you say? It’s not for people to post disgusting pictures and be rude just because someone feels like it. If you are going to do that then why you are there, it’s for people to stay in touch with their friends and family in a civilized manner. That is another one of the reasons why I only use it for blogging now and the occasional status, I don’t really read anything else, I just skim it because it is turning into a whining mess in my opinion. It’s boring now, you can be on it for an hour and not even realize it and what are you looking at nothing just skimming through not seeing anything that is not what it was meant for. So why not try to bring it back to what it was intended for.
What Is Social Media Meant For? The means for Twitter
But enough about Facebook what about twitter? What is it meant for? First of all what the background on Twitter, Twitter first came into existence in March 2006, two years after Facebook. The question is what is Twitter meant for and is it being used for that purpose? Twitter is a social network, but it is not for friends to stay in touch twitter is for friends, family, and co-workers to stay connected through short-form writing. That was what it was meant for, although most famous people are on twitter and you can follow them to see what is up with the next upcoming movie or if it’s a musician that you follow the next up and coming music.
Most people that are in the spotlight now use Twitter, because it is short and to the point. Although some people tweet about one hundred or more times a day about random things just like Facebook I don’t use it like that. I do, however, follow celebrities who are more on Twitter than on Facebook because Twitter is more private in a sense then Facebook is, although that is just my opinion.
I have been on twitter since it began, and I have noticed that the people that I follow on twitter some of them use it as a social aspect, but some use it the way they use Facebook, telling people all about what they are doing at that exact moment, that is not the proper way of doing it, or is it? In my opinion, Twitter is to send short little messages, about what is going on in their lives to their followers or not even what’s going on in their lives but what they think their followers should know. I have twitter but I never really used it until this year, I have followers on Twitter who tweet about everything and I mean everything and it gets annoying that is not what it was meant for. Twitter was meant for short little sayings about what is going on not six tweets about one thing.
I used to use twitter as telling people what was going on in my life, but now I just use it to promote my blogs. Twitter is another promotional tool in a sense to let people know different things about what you are doing in little tidbits, not your entire life one hour after another.
What is Social Media Really Meant For Pinterest
What about Pinterest that is the newest of the three platforms what is it meant for? Pinterest came out in 2011 as a website, and in May 2012 it was offered as an app for iPhones and Ipads. Most of Pinterest’s users are female. What is Pinterest meant for? Pinterest is meant for you to find things you like and pin it to your board so that you can use it later, for example, DIY projects, that you can do at your house rather than hiring someone. It is meant for creative abilities to blossom in a sense, because of all the different things that it offers. It’s not meant for you to post your own content, there is a way to do that, but mostly it is meant for you to find things that you are interested in and the content is there for you. You just have to choose what you like the best and pin it to a specific board. The rumor about Pinterest is, it came out to keep women at home, but is that the real reason? It wasn’t meant to keep women at home or at least that is not listed anywhere, Pinterest is a social creation website for sharing and categorizing images found online. The site's name is a portmanteau of the words “pin” and “interest.” Pinterest categories include architecture, art, DIY, and crafts, fashion, food and drink, home décor, science, and travel. Nowhere does it say Pinterest is to keep women in the house. Although that is what people think it is for, men can use it too, it is for anyone who wants to try new things. Or find new clothing options, which is what Pinterest offers so why not pin it.
So now that I have explained what each of these social media platforms has to offer, are they being used for what they are meant for? In retrospect, yes to an extent, it depends on the person and what they want to use their social media for, I have already told you what I use Facebook and Twitter for but what do I use Pinterest for, I use it as a promotional tool and to find things that interest me and that I would love to try at a later date, the quotes that I find are for inspiration, for whatever I am doing at the time. These media outlets are there to be used as promotional tools, keep up with family and friends and categorize your likes in a way. that is what these social media platforms are for, not that they are used for that all the time, so why not try to get back to what they were meant for it might surprise you to realize why they came out in the first place.
