Work from Home Ideas for Busy Moms

Updated on September 29, 2011

More Work?

Being a Mom is a full time job, so why would you want to get more work? Well for starters no matter how rewarding it is to work with your kids and to see them make daily progress, there is also a need to get paid in cash. Some families are lucky and have no trouble with money, but the majority of us will agree that a little extra cash is always welcome.

If you have chosen to stay at home and look after your kids, it does not mean that you are destined to not earning your own money. There are a number of things that you can do sitting at home that can help you pick up some extra cash along the way. Here I'd like to give you some ideas for work from home businesses which have worked well for other mothers in the past.

So after you pack off your kids for a while to school and finish the cooking and the household chores you can get down to setting up a small business from your home. You don't even need to rent office space, as you can operate right out of your virtual office on the internet. Of course as with any business some initial investment is required, but just get the basics that you need to function and get started making money.

Make money at home with these businesses

Home Business Idea Number 1

Freelance online at the skill that you already have. For instance if you have a background in journalism you can be a freelance writer. Or start a blog on something that you know a lot about. A simple blog with a good niche and interesting content can be a real money spinner. Of course you do need some help setting up the site and a bit of investment for the hosting et al.

Home Business Idea Number 2

Baby Sitting or Creche is a great idea if your kids are still small and at home most of the day. This way you can take care of your kids and help out other working mothers with their kids and get paid for it. Of course it would only work if you really love children a lot and actually want to spend time with them. If you are looking at a business venture which gets you a break from your own kids, this may not be ideal for you.

Home Business Idea Number 3

Multilevel Marketing is also a good idea to consider. Sure you won't become a millionaire overnight, but you will have a little stream of money coming in on a regular basis. Pick a company with care and in a field which you are familiar. For instance if you use cosmetics and are passionate about make up you will enjoy working as a beauty consultant. Or if you feel greatly about maintaining a healthy lifestyle you can become a lifestyle coach.

Home Business Idea Number 4

Cooking is also a passion and a talent which can convert well into a small side business. A person I know sells desserts made to order. So any one having a party in the neighborhood just gives her a buzz and she delivers the pudding. She even gets the dishes back to reuse for the next pudding, saving on a constant investment. Of course if you break the dish you pay for it. It is a incredibly simple but highly effective small business based on her cooking skills.

Home Business Idea Number 5

Candle Making is a simple skill to master. If you are artistically inclined you can pick up a candle making kit and get to work right away. Make up your own designs of floating candles, taper candles, beeswax candles and you are ready. You can sell the candles in any local gift shop in town. Or if you don't want to tie up with anyone you can sell them online on eBay or Amazon. Setting up a virtual shop is very simple with these two sites and selling was never easier.

These five ideas are just the tip of the small home business iceberg. Other ideas can include becoming a travel agent, business consultant, costume designer, dance instructor, dating service or match making operator, dog walker, yoga trainer, interior decorator, desktop publisher, bill payment service, turn key housekeeping service, party planner, plant nursery, pregnancy exercise coach, and so many more things.

Take a look at website www.dreambig.origamiowl.com. Feel free to email us with any questions: kmichels1@gmail.com. This is a young and tremendously successful custom jewelry direct selling company and great work from home opportunity. You can sign up as designer/rep for this company and sell their great products. It's much like Tupperware, Avon and other direct marketing sales where you do home hosted parties but this company is young and products are wildly popular. The company is coming up on two year anniversary and is at $250 million dollars in revenue. The crazy thing is that it was started by a teenage girl who was making her own lockets to sell. It's my wife who actually signed up and sells the products and I was extremely skeptical, having been hit with the Amway type sales pitch in the past but I am a true believer now because we are seeing the tangible affects of true income. Our monthly group override commissions are currently averaging $1500/month and have been selling for just little over a year. That is just group override in addition to weekly commission on sales and direct commission by buying at rep cost and selling at retail directly. This company is also a great faith filled company and really making a positive impact on communities, so just great opportunity all the way around. Please check out our website and reach out to us if you are interested. Good luck in all your endeavors.

If your a dab hand at sewing, I've noticed a pretty simple idea/trend recently of people making cute little covers, bags and soft sleeves for peoples gadgets. You could probably find cheap offcuts and some discounted trimmings and your away. I've seen some selling for $80!

They can't be too hard to do as most of them are a simple rectangle in shape!

Artwork, setting up a website can be daunting for some technologically challenged people. Although it does make good business sense for a home based business.

Pre-Launch, yes it does make sense to check out a good feasibility study before you begin your business.

Thank you Neil, Joshua and Cris for stopping by.

Meddie knitting clothes is an excellent business to do from home. I know a lady who does my son's sweaters each winter and she makes a good income out of it.

I am not a mom, but just babysitting for a day or so makes you realize what it's like. I have always worked on the computer for my job & think it would work pretty well even when there are kids around. Obviously you aren't as efficient and just don't get as much done, but that's OK.

Stay home mommy 3, you need to get that business set up, specially if you are already making the candles. A lot of women feel silly trying to sell their handcrafts to relatives and friends, that's why you should use the online option. Set up a store on ebay!

You can always try being a ChaCha guide as well. I gave it a shot for a couple weeks and made about $50 working an hour or two a day. It's not for everyone, though, especially for full time work. But if you've got free time, you may want to give it a shot.

It always excites me whenever I see women put up their own businesses and become independent. Mompreneurs have great insights into marketing gaps and the effort they put in to juggle their time to balance home and business is really amazing. Cheers to all the moms who give it a go! I hope we will continue to see the rise of mompreneurs as future leaders of our businesses and communities.

Thanks, I have telecommuted for the past ten years for various companies. There are great opportunities out their for legitamate work, just remember if you choose to work at home through telecommuting your children need to either be old enough to watch themselves or at school( I have even had mom's telecommuting with a babysitter watching the kids). Telecommuting for major companies is a real job and as such companies that hire telcommuters are sticklers for noice, and no children. However when my child was younger I too did a in home day care and I manage to have the best of both worlds without my children suffering and the added benefit of having someone to play with!
