When working as a team, each individual in the team should realise that they have to share a common goal to achieve. So everyone should contribute equally to all the tasks and efforts needed in the team. When people from different cultures, backgrounds, or even the same work together, conflicts are unavoidable. But we should not let it affect the team work. So always having discussions and meetings and developing a structure and model will help overcome all these conflicts and increase the chances of a successful team.
In our team there have been conflicts and they have always been dealt with in a very sensitive and sensible manner. Most of the time, conflicts arise due to poor listening skills, ignorance, lack of communication which all lead to misunderstanding. Also few people not contributing to team work, disagreements lead to conflicts in a team. These are identified by constantly taking feedback from team members and through supervision. Some conflicts are observed while in the work environment, and I report them confidentially to my manager during supervision if I am not able to directly get involved.
If conflicts are serious, we refer them to Employees helpline, which is a confidential line, where we can talk to people about problems that we face at work, and they will be suggesting ways to handle work place issues. Sometimes managers refer employees to occupational health, which is a one to one session, which if needed will last up till 6 sessions. Here you will be able to talk to your worker face to face, and they suggest ways of improving, and also will write to the manager of any issues that need improvement. These are to help both the employee and the employer.
We can not always take conflicts as destructive, because they can lead to improved ways of working. It will help bring in new ideas, and help fellow workers to improve their skills. These are done by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the team members, solving the problem of lacking equal participation, understanding and overcoming the differences and then resolving the conflict.
When there are improvements in team or there are good team performances, the information and appreciations are shared with the team. To make the employees feel better, they are given a little treat like chocolates, or going out for a team lunch. If it is something big that is achieved it goes on the weekly newsletter. There are also awards given out every year on various categories for best team, best employee, and it is given for various achievements and performances. Our team was nominated for best performance in ___________ (removed for confidentiality purposes) in the year 2010.
Regarding my own individual work, I constantly talk to my team members about what more support they need, and if there was anything I could do to help the team perform better. I also discuss this with my manager during my supervision. So any extra work or support that is expected from me, I look through it to see if I can manage it among the workloads that I have and I agree. I take this feedback to improve my performance and support the team so that the work environment becomes less stressful, and enjoyable. Recently when my manager has been off on a long sickness absence, and a few other co-workers off sick or on annual leave, I have spoken to team about their needs and have helped the social workers with their work just to take the pressure off them.
Any feedback received on behalf of the team, for the team or myself is looked through and reflected upon. Then if necessary a meeting or a discussion is held to discuss what can be done to improve the performance based on the feedback, and it is implemented straight away. Performances and improvements are monitored to see where the team stands and how much more input is needed to achieve the target or objective.
