Are People Becoming More Rude?

It might just be coincidence but over the past week I've been witness to a few incidents of rudeness that has no just cause. For example speaking to shop assistants like they were trash; a young waitress was spoken to like she was some kind of inferior species. One of my home-carers was spoken to so rudely that she came back to our office in tears! What is the problem? Is it just too much of an effort for some people to give respect and speak politely?
