   Should priority be given to the younger generaion on help with unemployment?
   
   After hearing the news, that the goverment are setting up unemployment schemes linked to businesses to train 18-24yr olds to get back into the work force, i was happy yet frustrated by this propsal.................happy because the younger generation are the future of the working industry of the future, and frustrated because at 51 and losing my business through the recession after building it up through hard work and determination,do not get the same help for returning back to work... all i recieve is job seekers allowance which is an appaling amount of money to live on per week.

   We have had employment schemes like that before in Canada. I think they are a good way to get young people experience. There should also be one for getting those over 50 back to work also.

   Many companys will be happy.  They will hire these kids for less pay.  Many people  have been at a job along time and are forced into early retirement, because they are making top dollar.
   It's actually cheaper for the companies to retire them, then to keep paying the higher wage.  They can turn around and hire 2 people to do the job at the bottom of the pay scale.  I dont agree with this, but thats the way it is.

   Thank you for your reply, you are right in your answer, i didnt know the scheme ran in Canada also!!!!!
   It is a terrible situation if you are unemployed, but the hardest part is getting back into the working group of people.

   To be honest, that 18-24 scheme is truly just for the kids not smart enough to get into college.  They won't come out and say it but it is the truth.  if they were smart enough to get into college they would be IN college OR already out in the workforce.  This is more for troublemakers and stupid or lazy kids.
   It pisses me off since as i write this I no longer have a full-time job and I am a parent with three kids.  I am not stupid and i am not lazy and I don't have the option to just live at home with Mom and Dad.

   It is already a priority under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). On February 17, 2009, The Recovery Act amends Section 51 of the Internal Revenue Code by adding youth as a Work Opportunity Tax Credit ( WOTC)  target group.
   
   Disconnected Youth: An individual who is certified as having attained age 16 but not age 25 on the hiring date; not regularly attending any secondary, technical, or post-secondary school during the 6-month period preceding the hiring date; not regularly employed during such 6-month period; and not readily employable by reason of lacking a sufficient number of basic skills.
   
   Employers get paid to hire them.

   I do not think that the younger generation should be given priority. Their youth is the one asset they already have which older persons can never again have to their own advantage.
   
   I agree that the younger generation are the this country's working future, but it is far more challenging for older persons to be seriously considered for jobs in most industries, especially in a professional capacity. Older persons typically have families to raise, mortgages to pay off and are actively saving for retirement and often paying off college tuitions and wedding bills for the younger generation.
   
   I realize that these are not exclusive comments. Some members of the younger generation are also doing these things. Good for them! But again, youth is on their side and they have a far greater chance of landing a great job than we older folks, so the priority would be misguided, in my humble opinion.

   Considering that the younger generation are the ones who will make up the work force 20 years from now and America's economy will be dependent on them, I can understand why the government is prioritizing them. That doesn't make it fair. Life isn't fair.
   If you are in employment and financial straights, the government will send you back to school, and most schools have some type of earn while you learn program. You may also be eligible for grants to keep your business open.
   Maybe instead of seeking a job, maybe you could do some research and get some ideas and suggestions on building your business back up. You did it once before. It will just be more of a challenge this time?

    I'm with wsp2469. I had to leave my job in January 2010 because my husband, who had lost his, got another 1,000 miles away. I have sent out countless resumes and had exactly two interviews. It's not like I'm some kind of unskilled labor- I'm a higher education and nonprofit professional with an advanced degree (working on another) and a variety of skills. I have a lot of assets and have been mystified as to why there has been so little interest in me. The only thing I can think of is that I'm an actual adult, not a pretty, nubile, unskilled brat. The thought that the government is encouraging age discrimination by focusing all of its job programs on people who do not have one iota of the education and skills that I have makes me even angrier.
