Many times it is the type of job that you apply for. I would not want a surgeon to be hired for their looks but that is one person I would want to know was qualified to do the job before they start cutting into people. However, between two people equally qualified many other more subjective considerations comes into play like looks. I think research shows that a person with a symmetrical face tends to generate more trust in others and so is perceived as a team player. So if the job is one that requires a lot of interaction with people and you rely on that person to build teamwork and trust, then I could see hiring managers taking that into consideration.
