I'm sorry to hear about you losing your job, I've been there myself and I know that as the days went on without a job they did not get any easier. Some days were ok and other days were very rough. Being that the unemployment market is rough and you don't know when you will be working again here is some practical advice that will help.
1.) Make a budget - Your unemployment benefit is only a percentage of what you were making, so spending like your still getting a full paycheck can deplete your savings. Only spend your money on essential family or personal needs whichever applies. Discipline is vital when it comes to this.
2.) Make changes in your lifestyle - Establishing a regular routine of exercise (if you haven't already) will help keep stress levels down and your body active which will help to fight against feelings of depression. There is a proverb that states in Proverbs 22:3 - "The shrewd one sees the danger and conceals himself, but the inexperienced keep right on going and suffer the consequences." You may have to cut back on costly food items, vacations, unnecessary purchases of new clothes, going to the movies, things like that. This will help you avoid falling into deeper debt. It might be hard at times to do this, but with some creativity and outside the box thinking you can replace those things with activities that wont cost you a penny.
3.) Be open to a new career - Perhaps you have done physical work all your life but you get a white collar opportunity like an office job. Don't be afraid to try something new, it may even pay less starting off but it still may meet your financial needs. Plus you never know it might just lead into a field you can grow to love.
4.) Be happy with what you do have - Sometimes you might wonder why you can't be better off financially but always remember it can always be worse. 1 Timothy 6:8 states : "So, having food and clothing, we will be content with these things." Keep material things in their proper place, as long as you have the essentials then be happy with that.
One day unemployment will no longer be an issue, neither will poverty or crime even exist. Visit www.jw.org to find out.
