I would have to say that a college certificate is still extremely important. Even though there are all the free online learning programs, a certificate shows that you completed course material, and  your identity was verified by the school. It also means that your coursework was checked over by a trained professor, whether they are an adjunct or not. Online learning seems to be best in areas like coding, and soft skills. Online free learning is becoming a bigger and bigger area, so this may change.

      Jackie,
I agree, most places need some kind of reference point that shows you paid your dues. I really hope the online learning degrees become more mainstream though.

In the line to get a job, college diplomas allow you to cut in front of all the people who don't have them, especially when it comes to jobs with a lot of applicants. I used to do the hiring for the costume shops I managed, and each year, I'd sort resumes in piles, according to how much education was listed. People with master's degrees were always considered first, and people with no college listed went to the bottom of the pile. By the time we got to those, if we ever did, it was for the lowest entry positions, or unpaid internships.

This really places things in perspective. I just moved to Portugal and I don't think I would have ever gotten the job I have now(even if it doesn't pay much) if I didn't have my college degree.

Yep. Also, I have a master's degree, and I never had to do any internships, or unpaid work. My first job out of school was with one of the best theatres in the country, as full time staff. That MFA really let me cut to the front of the line.

I think, yes. Because in today's competitive world everyone is equally talented there are many positive qualities in everyone. Yeah I do agree that there are free learning sources but as talented human resources are available & these free learning sources are available to everyone means any university grad can also use them which will add up his / her qualification so to increase the qualifications a college or university certificate is still important in today's world.
