How can the independent construction operators recover and compete against the large companies?
Only small company's get big in many ways by hard work and big thinking, big service, quality and trustworthiness.
Are you in residential work? If so, get out! If you are already in commercial and public works, start hooking up with local agencies, make contacts at those agencies. Attend their small business seminars and attend their monthly or weekly meetings. Find DBE's in your area who could complement your work and suggest them to large contractors who need to fill DBE contract requirements. Beef up your website with past projects. Organize your business- accounting, invoicing, HR, marketing. Look into possible green building trends and getting LEED certification. There is a lot you can do. Hope this helps!
Personal relationships built on honesty, trust, flexibility and respect are key. Nurture all your friendships and try to make more, expanding ever outward in larger circles.
