Updated on September 11, 2013

Content is Key but Don't Overlook the Importance of Good, Clean Design

Student? Fresh out of school? Looking to change jobs? Everyone needs a well crafted resume. And while it's common knowledge that great content is key; good, clean, communicative design is a sure way to drive your resume to the top of the pile. Your resume is probably your most important job-seeking tool and after you've written an effective resume, designing it so that it's eye-catching, professional, and aligned with your target employer can be tricky. That's where online marketplaces like GraphicRiver come in extremely handy. With over 100 resume, cover letter and reference templates for under ten bucks you can get off to an easy start customizing your own identity.

Resume templates that are fresh and creative, perfectly typset, easily editable, AND under $10 bucks? Yes, Please!

Odds are your resume needs a facelift and that's where this post comes in handy. Below you'll find inspirational samples, great templates and tutorials mixed in with tips on how to get started creating an effective resume. If you've never attempted to redesign your resume before it can seem a little intimidating and the key is not to get too fussy with your design. The most effective resume employs a clean, sometimes even basic visual style and starts with picking a great looking font.

Tip #1: The Secret to a Great Looking Resume is a Great Looking Font

Finding a great font for your resume can be a little time-consuming but it's worth every minute. If you're not on a budget and looking to add some high quality fonts to your library head to the adobe marketplace. If you need to save some cash check out dafont.com for some great looking fonts for free.

Basic Rules:

1. Don't use a font that is too overly stylized

2. If you do choose something with a little more character (ex. Harabara) don't use it everywhere. In this case you would use it just for your name and maybe contact info and choose a second sans for everything else.

3. Do mix sans serifs with serifs if you so desire (great example here and below). Be consistent with their use and make sure that the letter forms of each font are complimentary. Sites like FontFuse can help take the guesswork out of pairing fonts effectively.

As always, please be cautious when downloading anything for free.

Tip #2: Soooo....Serif vs. Sans Serif? The decision is up to you. - You can even use both! The key to using fonts effectively in your resume is to be consistent

Can't decide? Try this: is the position you are applying with a more traditional company? Use a serif. More modern or cutting edge? Go with a sans serif. That's not to say serif's can't create a modern resume, that just tends to be an easy rule for those without design degrees! Whatever you do, you have to be consistent: if you decide to use a sans-serif font for a main heading, do so for all your headings, and use the same sans-serif font each time. Generally, you should use no more than two fonts in your resume.

Tip #3: You Gotta Use Columns! - The easiest way to create a balanced page is by using columns to format your text

Keep in mind that since employers may have very little time to read your resume, you want to help them get through it quickly by including noticeable "stops." The reader's eye will stop when it reaches the end of each column. Typical rules: Two unequal columns works best but be sure to use no more than three columns on your resume.

Tip #4: Make it easy to skim - Continuing with the emphasis on great type: you have to create a distinct typographic hierarchy

Ellen Lupton defines it best:

"A typographic hierarchy expresses an organizational system for content, emphasizing some data and diminishing others. A hierarchy helps readers scan a text, knowing where to enter and exit and how to pick and choose among its offerings." from Thinking With Type

Tip #5: A Little Design Goes a Long Way - Make sure you don't overshadow your own information

In the end, the information on the resume is the most important part and that is why the design of this particular template is so effective. I love the icon and accent color. They're subtle and simple but personal, allowing you to standout. Using a grid, playing with typography, and making great accent color choices can come together to create the perfect design and InDesign is the place to do this. Don't have the software? Tip #6: Avoid Harsh Colors, Clip Art, and Other Types of Extraneous Decoration - Just trust type and design a creative, subtle indicator to direct the eye and a

This is one of my favorite examples (I know the detail is a little difficult to see) because it is so successful at being designed without being over designed or distracting. The indicator line is subtle and simply but highly creative.

Tip #7: Remove Extra Indentations - Allowing scanning through text weight and color

Even better: take them all out. While useful in outlines, too many indentations in a résumé will cause your eyes to jump all over the page, destroying page harmony. The goal is to have all text align to each other.

If you really want a great looking resume to enhance your great content you're going to have to breakup with Microsft word....

This is scary, I know. The truth is you'll waste more time trying to get your Word document to look good than you will spend learning the basics on Adobe InDesign.

Tip #8: Maximize White Space - Too little whitespace results in a jumbled, unreadable mess

Often times resume are xeroxed or viewed on computer screens, so it's helpful to utilize one of the most basic rules of layout design: white space is a good thing. White space simply refers to blank space. It gives the appearance of a clean, well organized page and helps you direct the attention of the reader. Additionally, it provides an aesthetically pleasing page that allows readers to "digest" information without feeling overwhelmed.

Tip #9: Design the Details First, Think about the Layout Second

Tip #10: Make Sure Your Material is Printable

Xeroz it before you mail it and print it before you email it

While it's easy to create a fancy resume or portfolio, it must print well. If it's a PDF resume and portfolio, it has to work on letter-size (or A4 for those in the UK) paper; if it's online, be sure to use printer style sheets and test in every browser imaginable.

A resume sums up everything about a prospective employee. So if you are looking for a job, the first thing you should keep in mind is to pen down a resume properly. Though content is the key, other important things should be taken into consideration such as neatness and cleanliness. The resume should look good and clean. One should avoid unnecessary details. These days professional resume writers can be hired and you can get your resume properly written by them. The article gives a detail update about the same which is equally important.
