What The Heck Is Squidoo?

Updated on July 21, 2014

Facts About Squidoo

This lens will tell you what Squidoo is, what a lens is, the history of Squidoo, how you can have fun with it, why writers can be creative with it, how you can make a lens about what you love to do, why anyone can do it and how you can make money using Squidoo!

What Squidoo Is And How It Started

Squidoo is a free easy to build webpage platform where you can write an article called a lens about your viewpoint on a subject that interests you or what you know a lot about!

Squidoo was started by Seth Godin in 2005. Seth is an acclaimed public speaker, a blogger and an author. He has written seven bestseller books and his blog was recognized as the best business blog by several publications.

The idea Seth had was to make Squidoo a place where you can help people understand your little part of the world. A page where you can include links and content and pointers and a bit of community to help people figure out what's going on.

You can have your lens be about whatever you want it to be about. Write about what you are passionate about, write what you know about. You can even promote your own website. Whether it is about vanilla scented candles or if it is about how to build a rocket. It doesn't matter what you build your lens about as long as you are having fun!

Have Fun Building Your Lens

I like to write mostly about Health, Beauty and Internet Marketing because that is what I do and it is something I know a lot about. My favorite subject to write about the beauty industry (because I have worked as a cosmetologist most of my life). I have several other things that I am passionate about too and sometimes I throw in a few off subject lenses. I recommend writing what you are most knowledgeable and passionate about to get started.

With Squidoo you can write about your favorite vacation getaway, your favorite band, write about your knowledge of how to build a computer from scratch, write about your dog, your kids, your job. There are so many things you can write about!

When you start building your first lens you will find that you will not be able to stop. You will be going about your everyday life and boom you get an idea to write a lens! It is fun and highly addictive!!

Make Money With Squidoo

Yes, you can make money for writing about what you love! I know it almost sounds too good to be true, but it is real. Now, you won't become a multi-millionaire but, you can make a little extra money to help pay some bills and heck if you get your lens up in the high rankings and get some repeat customers you could make quite a significant amount every month.

Don't quit your full time job right away because this is not a get rich quick kind of thing. It's just a way to make a little bit or a lot of extra money.

Now the way it works is: You write a lens about what you are passionate about but, search the topic you are going to write about and find out how hot this topic is on Google or Yahoo. If the topic you are going to write about is searched a lot you are on to something that can make some money.

What you do is you build the lens and add modules that are already set up for you in Squidoo. You add these modules to your lens and make them related to the subject you are writing about. These modules are affiliate modules like Amazon, ebay, Café Press and others.

Every single one of these modules generates directly attributable revenue for your lens, and Squidoo pays a royalty to you or to your chosen charity based on that income. Cool isn't it? But, that is not all (sounds like a commercial) you can also make money from Google AdSense ads. They are used to generate royalties for the whole co-op (ie, everyone gets a cut).

But, wait there's more! (there is that commercial again). You can put affiliate links on your lens for the whole world to see. Free advertising! and, a possibility to make more affiliate sales! Woo hoo!!!

Understanding How You Get Paid

Here is a breakdown of the ways you get paid being a lensmaster!

Basically you get paid in three ways.

The first is through Adsense revenue. The money goes into one giant pot, to prevent click fraud, and then it gets distributed throughout all of the lensmasters on Squidoo depending on the rank of their lenses and the quality of their lens.

You are paid on a Tier system : The Tier system works like this...

Lenses with higher lensrank get a higher percentage of the money in the pool. The better you rank the higher percentage you get. So, it makes sense that if you rank poorly you will get less.

Here is the breakdown: (This is an example of how the scale works, it is not set in stone.)

Tier 1 Lensrank of #1 - 2,000 = 25% of the pool

Tier 2 Lensrank of 2,001 - 10,000 = 17% of the pool

Tier 3 Lensrank of 10,001 - 85,000 = 8% of the pool

Tier 4 Lensrank of more than 85,000 = 0% of the pool ( but you can still make your affiliate earnings)

The second way is through affiliate modules provided by Squidoo that you can add to your lens. You get 50% affiliate commission. Examples of these are Amazon, Café Press and Zazzle.

And the third way is by third party affiliate links that you provide yourself. An example is if you are an affiliate with Commission Junction or Clickbank. You can use those links in your lens.

Note: The Tier system can change as Squidoo grows. So, the Tier system scale I showed you was an example.
