How to make money writing without writing a book

Updated on July 10, 2012

Is it possible?

I have seen countless sites claiming so many different "get rich" schemes using your computer. Many of them titled "How to turn your computer into an ATM" Well, I keep checking the cd drive and there still hasn't been any cash in there! Go figure.

A few years ago I discovered blogging. Blogging, basically is writing short articles about things that you are knowledgeable of. Many of my articles are about swimming pool care and maintenance since I am in the industry and have vast knowledge. The topics are almost unlimited as far as what you can write about.

So why am I writing this article? Because I am going to make money doing so. That's right. Each article I write will eventually begin to incur revenue. So yes, it is very possible to write about what you love or are skilled in and make money from it.

Although the title of this article says "without writing a book", you can write poems, stories, I suppose even a book if you wanted. I have seen some pretty well written stories on here.

My experience

A few years ago I was searching for "how to trim a dogs nails" or something like that. I came across an article on hubpages. There was a link about making money writing about what you love to write about and get paid for it. I'm not really sure why I clicked it since I had seen millions of ads about making money online which had most always turned out to be scams, or wanted a "start up fee" Usually some kind of catch.

Since this was all free to sign up and start writing, I decided to give it a shot. I wrote a few articles, not completely sure of what I was doing, and published them. The articles looked great since they make it so easy and have all the tools to make your articles look professional.

It takes time

This is no "get rich quick" thing by any means. I had published maybe 10 articles over a period of time and after several months, I was excited when it showed that 5 people in a day had viewed my articles although I was making little to no money. I was discouraged and sort of ignored my hubpages data for quite a few months. But after deciding to check it again, It had jumped from 5 people a day to 50 or so per day. Wow! But the money?, still not much but it was growing. Maybe .20 cents a day. I decided to research how I could increase traffic and educated myself on all that hubpages had to offer me as a writer, or blogger. I had learned about Google adsense, referral tracking, and all the other stuff that are available tools to increase revenue and traffic.

So just over 2 years, I have more articles now and am well ahead of that old 50 hits a day thing. Try more like 5 or 6 hundred a day, and growing along with the revenue.

How does it work?

If you are reading this, you are on hubpages. (you can sign up here) I will list some links below to some of my other "hubs" as an example of what a published article looks like. This article is obviously also a published article. You can be as creative as you want though. If you notice on this page, there are ads all over the place. Google ads, ad choices, ebay ads. It's pretty self explanatory how I make money on this site just by writing. It truly is as simple as that. Write about what you love, then Google places ads as well as the eBay program, hubpages ad program,, referrals, etc..and you get paid! But remember, it takes time so don't quit your day job....yet.

Does it cost anything?

No. Nothing. Nada. This is totally free to sign up and start writing. You won't ever be charged any "fees" or anything like that. You will need a Google account for the Google Adsense program. This is also free. So what are you waiting for? Sign up so I can make some money! yes, if someone signs up for hubpages through your article or blog, you will make money from that too!

Joining Hub Pages has been a great move for me as well. It isn't fast money, as you say, but it grows gradually and it's fun! Great hub.

Hi Rob. A very interesting hub. Sorry I don't need your pool services here in the uk. You certainly have a niche product to offer, so carry on growing your business and helpful hubbing.

I use everything they offer. Referral trackers are great, and I also link to my other hubs within hubs. Also alot of people take care of their own pools and want to know how. I try to write about things I know people will search for. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I also submit each individual article URL to the Google search engine. meta-tags and keywords are very important. Thanks for the comment.

Writing is the closest thing to a get rich quick program there is and you won't get rich quick doing it. There are, however, countless ways to make money online. Check this link out

    Great hub. Voted up!
