In reality, a well written concise cover letter gives you the advantage of commenting (briefly) on some of your strengths. Because the resume and cover letter can be extremely important in getting an interview, be sure you understand the employer's expectations; they may not want a resume or letter because they rely on the online information.

Cover letters and resumes are of special interest at this point in time because unemployment is at an all time high. Some career experts consider cover letters a waste of time. On the other hand, most hiring professionals believe an effective cover letter is more important in the current job market than in the past. It is important to note that the cover letter must be well written and include certain details to be effective. It is definitely a waste of time to send a cover letter that does not meet certain standards.

An excellent resume and cover letter are keys to a job interview. With so many job seekers, landing an interview can be a serious challenge. Because cover letters should be brief, there is sometimes the mistaken perception that they are easy to write. This is not true. Take time to understand what to write and how to do it. There are some excellent books available with sample letters that can guide you. Invest your time and energy in this important part of the job search.

In the age of technology, many resumes are sent by email; a cover letter is still important. Be sure the subject line is relevant; you want to be sure the email is opened and read.

YOUR COVER LETTER CAN BRING ATTENTION TO YOUR RESUME

Do you have a great resume - you have reviewed and edited it and it just sparkles! Great. Now be sure you have a cover letter that is professional and just as awesome as your resume.

DO I REALLY NEED A COVER LETTER?

Why You Need a Cover Letter

The ultimate purpose of a resume and cover letter is the job interview. There are other important considerations that will lead to that ultimate goal. As you focus on the cover letter, it is important to think about the hiring company. What can you do to help the company achieve its goals? How can you contribute to the profitability of the company? Why are you the perfect fit for the open position?

During your research for the job, determine exactly what skills and experience the company needs for the open position. This will be your guide in demonstrating how your skills and experience meet each of the stated job requirements.

FRIENDLY REMINDER

AFTER YOU GET THAT INTERVIEW AND THE INTERVIEW HAS BEEN COMPLETED, REMEMBER TO SEND A BRIEF THANK YOU LETTER.

LET THE COMPANY KNOW HOW INTERESTED YOU ARE IN THE OPEN POSITION AND THAT YOU APPRECIATE THE TIME THEY HAVE GIVEN YOU TO INTERVIEW.
