Etsy: The Best Shopping Ever

Updated on March 18, 2013

So long Joe Shopping will not be missed!

When was the last time you received a personal "Thank You" note from your favorite store at the mall? I'm not talking about a mass-produced postcard with a coupon (that you find in your mailbox) designed to entice you to spend more money; I mean a hand-written note just for you from the owner of the store. Probably never, right? No thank yous? Really? Well what about a nice little extra surprise tucked inside your shopping bag? None of those either? Hmmmmmm...

Well what if I told you that those two things were pretty much par for the course where I do most of my shopping these days? What if I told you that this marvelous place I shop has no lines, friendly shopkeepers, extremely personalized service, totally unique items AND is open 24/7? (for myself, I'd be jumping up and down in front the monitor yelling, "Sign me up!!" :o) Etsy is a wonderful online shopping community that offers everything I've just talked about, and I hope this lens will help you see what a sensational place it is to shop.

Here are Five Reasons Etsy is the Best Place to do Your Shopping - (for those of you that actually NEED a reason to go shopping... :o)

  • Unique Gifts for Any and Everyone
  • Handmade Items for Every Taste and Budget
  • Artist Accessibility (send them a "convo"/conversation and they will answer you)
  • Personal and Friendly Service
  • Over 100,000 Sellers offering anything you can imagine

Cool! I found an animated Etsy

What do you think?

Is Etsy the Best Shopping Ever for Handmade?

Etsy on Rachel Ray - (This is how I learned about it)

Buying handmade makes for better gift-giving

The giver of a handmade gift has avoided the parking lots and long lines of the big chain stores in favor of something more meaningful. The purchaser of the gift has the satisfaction of supporting an artist or crafter directly.

The recipient of a handmade gift receives something truly special that is one-of-a-kind and made with care and attention that can be both seen and touched. It is the result of skill and craftsmanship that is absent in the world of large-scale manufacturing.

PLUS: You'll never have to worry about duplicate gift giving again :o)

Buying handmade is better for people

The ascendancy of chain store culture and global manufacturing has left us dressing, furnishing, and decorating alike. We are encouraged to be consumers, not producers, of our own culture. Our ties to the local and human sources of our goods have been lost. Buying handmade helps us to reconnect.

IN OTHER WORDS: wonderfully personal service for everyone, not just people with pots of money or those buying big ticket items (I mean us regular folks, too :o)

Buying handmade is better for the environment

The accumulating environmental effects of mass production are a major cause of global warming and the poisoning of our air, water, and soil. Every item you make or purchase from a small-scale independent artist or crafter strikes a blow to the forces of mass production.

P.S. Etsy offers a huge number of sellers that specialize in recycled art, and plenty more that sell fabulous vintage finds.

Here are some of my favorite places on Etsy. I've prefaced them with little blurbs about the sellers and their shops...

A Bit About Little Studio Jewels

Meghann has some of the loveliest handmade jewelry I've ever seen (I know because I have some :o) Her shop also has some beautiful photographs available for purchase. Meghann is delightfully friendly, always happy to do custom pieces, and donates regularly to charity.

Pamela is an absolutely charming shopkeeper and offers a fabulous selection of findings, charms and the like for anyone that enjoys making their own jewelry. We have bought a number of different horse charms and related findings from her and I am always delighted with what I receive :o)

Donna was my very first "Etsybuddy" and is not only friendly, but wonderfully outgoing. The four remaining shops below all belong to her (yep, all of them). Her artwork is nothing short of breathtaking (I'm saving up) and must be seen to be believed. She did a pair of custom paintings for a friend, so I have seen her work in person and can honestly rate it as "SPECTACULAR" :o)

Her other shops offer an eclectic selection of items from vintage clothing to craft supplies to whimsical home decor from days gone by...

Your turn: Do you shop Etsy for handmade? - If you haven't yet, are you going to try it?
