Updated on April 12, 2020

Vikram Brahma is a health, fitness enthusiast and online motivational speaker. He retired after winning 100, 200 & 400 meters race in 2005.

Introduction

A person with skills will be valuable for society. There are many people whom we admire because they truly possess desirable skills. People get high salaries because of their skills and their ability to demonstrate those.

As per my understanding, any skill that is important for managing life can be considered as a life skill. But for this article purpose, I have specially selected five important skills.

These skills as per me should be taught separately in school or colleges with real-life examples. Based on these skills live projects should be given to the students. And I highly recommend to the general public to master these skills.

So, let’s dive in and see what these skills are.

Goal Setting Skill

First and foremost we should master exactly how we can set up our goals. This goal setting is known by many other different names like target, purpose, aim or objective.

Although there are many ways to set up goals, I will like to share one simple technique with you.

Whenever you set goals, please set them on daily, weekly and monthly basis. First, make quarterly goals. But if you fail to achieve then repeat again and again until you succeed.

By doing so soon you will be able to see some important patterns. Keep your eyes open and observe the things on a daily basis. Because in this way it will be easy for you to monitor the progress. And if possible get someone accountable to monitor your growth.

Financial Skill

Now the second most important skill which I believe must be taught is learning about financial skill.

You may be surprised to know that the top 10% of adults hold 85% of the entire wealth, while the bottom 90% hold the remaining 15% of the world's total wealth, and the top 30% of adults hold 97% of the total wealth.

Why so much difference in the distribution of wealth? Because we are not taught about how to generate wealth in real sense. We were just taught to get a degree, get a job, marry and blah blah. I am not saying the job is bad but it’s more of a rat race.

So, how can we start learning about the financial skill? For this we can start by reading financial books, blogs, but the best way will be to get trained under a successful mentor.

Communication Skill

Another extremely important skill is learning the art of communication. I cannot stress how important this skill is. When I say communication it includes all speaking, listening and writing.

From my personal experience, I have seen many people grow fast because of this individual skill. Because this is one of the most important skills to have especially if you are in a job.

The best part is it can be learned like any other skill. All it takes is time, effort, lots of practice and the ability to use it in real life.

So, my honest advice will be to read, write and speak on a daily basis or take some courses online or offline. This will really skyrocket your career especially if you’re in the communication and technology sector.

Creative Thinking

Imagination is the preview of life’s attraction. Those who can think creatively and differently for solving the problems are a blessing for society.

In simple words, creative thinking is the process of looking at the problem from a fresh or different perspective. Many organizations and jobs demand creative thinking. And these guys are highly rewarded.

So, how can we learn the art of creative thinking? Some of the techniques are - ask lots of questions and look for as many ways to solve the problem.

Paste your questions in front of you so your mind can think about it often. Post on social media, who knows you might get some good ideas from there.

Then allow yourself to think and work only on your most productive hours. But remember ideas can come at any time.

Relationship Skill

At last, I will definitely like to say relationship skills are very important which cannot be learned in a few hours. Some people are born tactful while others have to learn this skill.

Humans are social creatures and we live in society therefore we must learn this skill. Many individuals are mentally broken despite having name and fame because of relationship skill.

We must learn to respect others point of view and way of thinking. We should not push our ideas and logic of thinking on others. Two people with different viewpoints can co-exist happily just like different flowers bloom together in nature.

Conclusion

In the end, I will just like to say that there are maybe more than thousands of skills. But I have selected these five life skills based on my personal experience. But I request you to share your viewpoints on this topic.

I said goal setting because life will be meaningless without this. I said financial skill because money is the source of our economy. I said communication and creative thinking skills because it will definitely help you in your bright career. And I said relationship because we are after all social creatures.

Very well-written, insightful article with practical information about developing five really vital life skills.

Thank you, Vikram, for sharing such a wonderful article. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this hub.

I'd like to add my personal life experience with the first life skill you mentioned, i.e. goal setting. Although I knew about setting up daily, weekly, or monthly goals long time ago, I only started following it since this new year and I really noticed some patterns of my thought process against achieving something in life.

I've achieved some monthly goals right in that month while some are still kept forwarding to the next month due to various reasons. But I have to say, it has really helped me track where I'm going in my life. I'd strong suggest everyone to do goal setting and develop all these essential life skills you mentioned. Thank you once again for writing such an amazing article.
