    become indispensable to your boss, for at least 6 months, then just tell them you want a promotion. They will return the favor of your hard work.

    The best thing to do if a position is available is to ask for it. Don't hold me to this, but I have found that virtues such as loyalty and intelligence often get one further in their career than a high-level of success at one's job. Always communicate well, both verbally and in written form. This sounds corny, but dressing well is very important and shows maturity of character. And at the end of the day, you must inquire after openings for promotion and make it known that you want to fill one of these positions. Try to solicit feedback from the decision maker on your own suitability for promotion.

    Great question.

    I think it varies a lot depending on your workplace.

    In many cases i think simply mimicking and sucking up to your boss or those at the top can work, although I believe it's quite dishonorable.

    Personally i think going beyond your call of duty without being asked is the most effective way.

    For example, in many jobs I have taken on (and learned how to do) bits and pieces that nobody else looked after.

    Sure, you're not getting paid to do it, but when a promotion opportunity comes up you'll be well positioned for it.
