Gifts For People Who Sell On Ebay
Welcome to my Holiday Gift Guide for People Who Buy and Sell on eBay!
In December of 1998, I brought home our first "home computer" that I'd purchased used from a friend.
Although I don't recall John's exact words, they were something like this: "What's that monster doing in the house?"
He was less than enthusiastic.
Undaunted, I went ahead and signed up for the local internet dial-up service and began learning about this thing called "the internet."
After a few days of seeing me on the computer, John sat down and began tooling around. A little while later, I heard, "WOW! Kath, you won't BELIEVE what I just found!" (or words to that effect!)
John had stumbled onto a site called "eBay."
The reason this was so exciting was because he had been in the business of buying and selling rare books for many years. And all of a sudden, there was this new place he could sell them.
On January 6, 1999, "jtbooks" debuted on eBay with a 2-volume history about the Wright Brothers, and days later the set sold. An eBayer was born.
Buying and selling on eBay has since become an important part of our lives, as it has for many other people.
This lens addresses the question "What types of gifts would be good for an avid eBayer?"
This Lens is Dedicated to my WONDERFUL Husband John
We joke around a lot about eBay, grabbing packaging materials from recycling bins (see details in the modules below ha ha!) and all that, but we actually take our buying and selling to make money VERY seriously.
When John broke his hip and arm just over 10 years ago, and was confined to a bed and wheelchair for a few months, he listed and sold hundreds of books without ceasing to keep us paying the mortgage. He did this for 6 months straight.
He's truly the man of my dreams, and I love him so much.
John, this lens is for you! :)
So, What DO You Buy For Someone Who Is Buying And Selling On eBay? - Surely there's SOMETHING out there...
So, this is sometimes a touchy area. At least for me. Because, when a person is really an avid eBayer - or should I say, if a person is one of those people who is buying and selling on eBay as a serious part of their job, you need to be cautious about what you get them.
At least in our house. You see, since John finds a LOT of stuff that he buys for resale at yard sales or thrift stores, nothing is sacred in our house.
When his mom once asked him if he wanted a particular item, his response was, "Mom, don't give me anything, because I'm just gonna sell it..."
And this is largely true. We have a saying at our house that just about EVERYTHING'S for sale - and ultimately, it is.
So, if there are any other people out there who are like that, it can be interesting! So, I've lined up a few ideas of stuff that you can get for an eBayer that they might enjoy.
Some tools eBayers can DEFINITELY Use...
This is 100% from our own experience. As an eBay seller, there are a few things that John MUST have. These are not "nice to haves" either - we MUST have a camera that can not only quickly and easily focus for general eBay photos and also short demonstration videos, but is also easy to use. It's helpful to have a small tripod. Also, how do you suppose we know how much to charge for shipping? We use a good quality scale. And, you know what the wonderful thing about these particular gifts is? THEY'RE NOT EXPENSIVE! :) Now THAT is something my frugal hubby loves. :)
Of course, if you sell heavier items, you might need a heavier duty scale. A lot of the smaller ones only register up to 10 pounds. This one goes to 400!
I have one of these mini tripods. They are VERY handy. John tends to have a steadier hand than I do when focusing up close, but no matter what, a tripod is a very inexpensive and timesaving tool.
This is John's NUMBER ONE Item - Hands Down: PACKING PEANUTS! - For every sale from Amazon on this page, Squidoo donates $1 to Room to Read
While John & I recycle and reuse everything we can get our hands on when we package our items, there is ONE THING that John prefers more than anything else. If he had only one choice for packing materials, it would be PACKING PEANUTS.
Yes, we use leftover grocery bags and bubble wrap, but John has discovered that packing peanuts suit nearly every imaginable packing situation. He packs things tightly so that they don't shift around in the box. He may begin by wrapping the item in recycled plastic bags, but then will carefully pack the peanuts around it.
Of course, we need to make sure that the box we're using is large enough as well. But, this is most definitely the #1 item on John's wish list. :)
Finally. A gift for an eBay seller that they probably won't sell on eBay since they can probably use it!
Of course, if you tell them you got it on Amazon, they might say, "Why? Didn't they have it on eBay?"
Does your eBayer Shop Thrift Stores?
You Can Find Inventory at Thrift Stores
Well, this is an eBook, or downloaded book - so you might not be able to actually WRAP it (unless you print it out) - but if the eBayer in your life is looking for new ways to find inventory, it's something to consider!
It's easy to ship anyway! :)
Just Thought of Something that John would LOVE!!
Any Yard-Saleing eBayer would love this!
If John asks me "so, Hon, what would you like to do this weekend?" I typically say something like, "Let's head down to North Conway for Indian Food!" (Shalimar's our favorite restaurant!) - or "Why don't we head to the coast?"
But, you know something? John is an avid yard saler. This is where he frequently finds stuff to resell. On a typical Saturday morning, he's bouncing out of bed before sunrise, ready to go.
I, on the other hand, am NOT so "bouncy" before sunrise. Especially to go yard saleing.
SO.... here is my idea! WITHOUT telling John, I shall BOUNCE out of bed before sunrise, make our juice and/or smoothies that we've been drinking to eat more healthfully, be showered, have a route mapped out, and be CHEERFULLY ready to rock & roll on the yard sale circuit for John.
As you can see from my carefully designed Gift Card here at the right, this is a gift that anyone can give their eBayer! And I'd be willing to bet it would put a smile on their face! I know it will for John! :)
The typical eBayer spends a lot of time sitting in front of the computer listing and managing auctions and storefronts. Whether it's coffee or tea or even just water, why not get your eBayer a mug designed just for that?
You probably can't tell from this photo, but it shows Santa flying out from an eBay screen.
Here's an Idea for Gifts that I GUARANTEE that Your eBayer will LOVE and USE!
Can you guess what it is???
Ok. I'll tell you! SHIPPING AND PACKAGING MATERIALS!
Bet you wouldn't have thought of that, would you? :) Here's the deal: Most eBayers (at least eBayers who ship their own items) need stuff like boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, etc.
This stuff can get really pricey. At our house, we have what we call "The Box Farm..." Everywhere we go, if we're in a supermarket, dollar store - you name it - and John sees a bunch of boxes broken down getting ready for the baler, he asks if he can have them.
When we go to a store where they recycle old plastic bags, John asks if he can have some - he uses it as packaging material.
At the Post Office here in Florida, they constantly throw away piles of stuff that shrink wrapped pallets. John grabs them.
(Uh... just make sure the "recycled" materials you're getting are clean - some people put some pretty "interesting" things in bags that they toss into the recycling bin... ).
Now, I doubt that you really want to get your eBayer a gift of recycled plastic bags from Wal-Mart (unless you're eBayer is like John, and would like that as a gift!).
But seriously - packing and shipping supplies are indispensable for anyone buying and selling on eBay, so take a look at what I found on Amazon. I guarantee you that your eBayer will appreciate it!
More Packing and Shipping Supplies
Ok, I know it sounds odd when someone asks, "So, Kath, what did you get John for his birthday?" And I answer, "A 6-pack of packing tape and a roll of bubble wrap."
But John's not the type who would want me to buy him a brand new Eddie Bauer shirt. "Kath, I'm just gonna sell it on eBay, and find my shirts at the thrift store for less..."
Sigh. But shipping and packaging? That's another story! You probably already noted that his #1 packing material is packing peanuts, but he does still use bubble wrap.
What can help save your shipment from damage? What will do it without staining your items with newsprint? BUBBLE WRAP!!
More bubble wrap... Kind of hard to write anything exciting about bubble wrap. But just look at your eBayer's face when they see THIS! :) You'd think you were giving them gold.
Don't forget the tape! This is a SERIOUS expense for eBayers. Don't underestimate the value and appreciation of this gift. I mean it.
We have a "box farm." This means that we save boxes from EVERYWHERE. Trust me... it's nice to have nice, clean boxes.
"How To" Books about eBay - Helpful if your eBayer is New to it all!
Since John and I have been buying and selling on eBay since 1999, we understand how it works fairly well, and we've taught others how to use eBay as well.
And, over the course of these last few years, we've been able to keep up with the changes in the platform as they occur. But we recognize that not everyone is up to speed with eBay.
For the budding eBayer, some of these "How To" guides might be helpful.
By the way: I made sure that the books and resources I chose were the most up-to-date as possible.
This was updated April 2013. Actually, We have been considering making a book on this topic. Hmm...
Frankly, I don't care for the title. Just something that bugs me. BUT, it's from February 2013. We need updated stuff, so there you go!
Also from 2013 - so these are the most updated guides I could find!
Of Course, No Gift-Giving Guide Would Be Complete...
No gift-giving guide would be complete without adding at least a FEW fun and esoteric items!
Have a look...
Finally... For the eBayer Who Has Absolutely EVERYTHING Else... - I Bring You...
Fun and Frivolous! Silly! Cute! And for the most part, utterly useless. But, your eBayer might not sell it from under you! That's because you got him or her something that probably won't sell on eBay. So they'll have to use it! :)
I WILL Sell more than I will BUY!!! (Keep tellin' ourselves that...)
When We're Selling on eBay, Here's Where You Can Find Us!
We primarily buy and sell on eBay during the fall, winter, and spring months since John is a builder in the summer. You know, one of those "Gotta make hay while the sun shines" types of work. :) But if we have auctions running, we'd love to have you stop by and see what we're up to.
When we tell you we find some of the oddest things... Well, here's the proof! :)
eBay stocking stuffers on eBay - For every sale we donate $1 to Room to Read
So... let's say you want to keep it all on the same page. You can find a nice eBay gift for the eBayer on ... well... eBay!
Thanks for reading this lens! If you have other ideas for the eBayer in your life, feel free to add!
