How to Make Keywords Research

Updated on April 6, 2013

The Importance of SEO and Keywords Research

Living in the digitalized era, the rules according to which people conduct business nowadays have changed. If you compare the situation today to what was happening only a decade ago, you will realize that more and more business activities are carried online.

From video conference calls held with members of the same team that work in offices situated thousands of kilometers away from each other, to electronic trade that allows us to have access to products and services from all around the world.

Having a comprehensive picture on today√Ęs business world where companies from different corners of the Globe compete on a common global market will help you understand the importance SEO (search engine optimization) and keywords research hold within your online business√Ę success.

Brainstorm your ideas

The very first to take before you start building your website and writing the content for it is to find the right keywords you will be using throughout the whole process. I said the right keywords, and by this I mean the ones that will enable your website to rank high in SERPs (search engine research pages).

First of all, use your common sense; put yourself in your potential customer's shoes; try to think about the words and phrases you would be using to find the respective products, services or information.

Once you have come up with a satisfactory list of personal keywords, try to analyze it objectively. Do these keywords suit your website's content and purpose? Will the visitors find what they are looking for? Will they continue browsing the website or will they just bounce back to the search page?

Answering these questions as objectively as you can is of utmost importance as your goal is to build a well optimized website using the right keywords. For instance, if your website provides solely information on video games, you may not want to optimize it on buy-keywords. Somebody looking to purchase the respective game will come to your website just to realize this is not an e-commerce venue, and go away. If, instead, you would have used information-keywords, your visitor would have ruled it out from the beginning (in case it would have appeared in SERP), which is a much better alternative as it does not increase your bounce rate.

Keywords research with Google Adwords & Google Trends

How to Use Google SEO Tools

As Google is the major player in the field of search engines, the free keywords research tools the Mountain View offers to all internet users, SEO experts and webmasters are the first to check. So, the second step of your SEO project refers to checking the list of keywords you obtained by brainstorming using these two Google tools.

Now, you might have a valid question, especially if you are new to this SEO thing: what's the difference between them? If it is to explain it briefly, we would say the Google Trends provides you with an insight on people general searches, while Google Adwords focuses on buy-keywords.

Conceived as a support to webmasters' online advertising campaigns, Google Adwords helps you understand the wording Internet users put into the major search engine when they want to purchase products or services.

Far from being perfect, these two tools are, however, very helpful as they will provide you with an insight into Internet users' mind. Looking at the metrics and suggestions they provide, you will understand which are the most frequently used linguistic versions, and optimize your pages accordingly.

Google Adwords Keyword Tool Tutorial

This is a very good tutorial on using the free keywords research tool provided by Google Adwords. Follow the instructions to understand the main concepts and to find out some tips and tricks that would better refine the results of your keywords research campaign.

Other keywords research tools

Besides these two Google platforms, there are also other tools to use for your keywords research purposes. One such example is Ubersuggest, which provides a rather long list of suggestions, but they are not always accurate. If your target language is not English, this tool becomes even less efficient.

Another useful tip is to use Google's keywords suggestions (yes, Google again!). If you don't have a special platform, insert the keywords you are considering one by one and check the bottom of the page for their suggestions. These are useful long tail keywords that other internet users have introduced in similar searches.

Check on the competition

On a borderless world like the Internet, spying on the competition is such an easy thing to do. You don't have to make fake phone calls, visit shops incognito or use your private connections to find out what your competitors are doing.

So how do you do it? Well, you have a list of words, right? By the way, have you prioritized it? If not, take the search volumes provided by Google Adwords as main criteria and arrange your keywords into the order of their priority.

Now, introduce them one by one in Google's search page and see who ranks higher and what they offer. Analyze the first 10 results, and make notes of the websites you are going to compete with. Are they real competitors? Do they offer the same products/services you are planning to sell via your website? What meta-keywords do they offer?

Since we got to this point, here are some another tricks you can use. First of all, keep a clean browser for this special keywords research purposes. Each bit of history you have on your Internet browser influences the results of your searches and you want to reach the most accurate results possible. Secondly, install the Chrome extension SEO Inspector if you want to check the competition's meta-data in no time.

If you are planning to do this keywords research regularly, you may consider getting a paid subscription to SEO-MOZ tools, which will do all this competition analysis for you, indicating who the major players are, how good their pages are, how difficult it will be to rank for a specific keywords, etc. Moreover, with these professional tools you can keep track of your progress and of the main changes in this highly dynamic environment.

Here is a very detailed video that explains how to use SEOmoz Keyword Difficulty Tool. Take a look at it, to find out what kind of information this instrument provides before you decide whether to use it or not. In my opinion, it is a very useful tool as it allows you to see how difficult it would be to rank high on a specific set of keywords, who your competition is and how authoritative their websites/pages are.

Any new ideas?
