Internet Writing -- My Online Articles With Lots of Views

Updated on October 7, 2014

When Writing Articles Online, What is "Lots of Views"?

I write articles online at quite a few Web sites. To be perfectly frank, I get paid to write online or I probably wouldn't do it even though I enjoy writing and it's one of the few things I do that I don't totally suck at. And yes, I'm confident enough to end a sentence with a preposition. So there.

With that in mind, I think writing using your own style and voice is important. If you regurgitate the same old stuff, that's what it'll be: the same old stuff. I think that has helped me with my moderate success at earning money. Another thing that's helped are the views my articles get. Some writing sites pay by views, so naturally views are important there.

Others pay in secret algorithms that no one can crack. Don't let them tell you any different. Others pay, I think, from purely the ad clicks but I don't really know for sure.

This lens will look at my articles online that have a lot of views. Please remember that "a lot" is a relative term. "A lot" in my case may be diddly squat compared to yours and certainly will be small taters compared to many seasoned writers with "a lot" of followers. For me, it's just me and my feeble attempts at marketing myself. Here goes.

Determing Article Views

This Can Be Tricky

Not all of the writing sites I write for provide statistics about views. And if I list a site here that does actually show views, please let me know where to see that information. Every writing site is set up a little (or a lot) differently.

At Yahoo Associated Content, views are shown right there on the Dashboard (when you click on the "articles" link to see the individual views by article). Each site has its own dashboard and frankly, I'm not the best driver.

Writing Doesn't Have to Be Hard

List My Five - An Article About Waffles? Yeah, waffles.

Name of Article: Top Five Add Ins for Waffles

Number of Views to Date: 4,143

At List My Five or List My 5 or whatever you want to call it, I wrote, in 10 minutes or less this article (or list as they're called there).

The Top Five Add Ins for Waffles.

I was probably just trying to reach some arbitrary number to get a trophy or something (you get trophies, well, pictures of trophies, for milestones) or maybe it was to not break my streak (if you publish one list a day, eventually you get another trophy for streaking and you can do it fully clothed). All of this is so rewarding (not!), but it does suck you in. That's seriously what I was thinking of when I jotted down this list one day.

The day, as I see on the article, was May 12, 2011. Not that long ago, but as I write this, on July 18, 2011, this list has had 4,143 views.

That's right: 4,143 views in just more than 2 months. Hmmm.

I have no idea where these views came from. Did someone Digg it? Did it get Stumbled? I have no idea. But it is one of my top ranking articles, maybe my very top ranking article, for views.

Squidoo - Got fiber?

Name of Article: Konjac Fiber

Number of Views to Date: 3,842

This article (or lens as Squidoo calls its articles) is fairly new, like all of my Squidoo lenses. I wrote it May 26, 2011, so the nearly 4,000 views is impressive to me. But I fear that like other hot topic type articles, this lens will not sustain its popularity. Time will tell.

I've actually read (parts of) this book and have seen it recommended online by successful writers. It has easily digestible chunks that make if a great reference book to keep handy.

Firehow - Firehow's a sleeper, but I make payout a few times a year.

Name of Article: How to Pick Movies to Watch on TV Using IMDB

Number of Views to Date: 1,341

I'm a huge movie and television fan. When I discovered IMDb (Internet Movie Database) a few years ago, I was like a kid in a candy store. You can look up a TV show and see when a specific episode will air next. Same with movies. I love it! Evidently a few other people do too.

Wizzley - This is a new Web site and the views show it.

Name of Article: Crafts from Around the World for Kids at Michaels

Number of Views to Date: 199

Wizzley is a fairly new Web site for online writers. I have only written six articles at Wizzley.

The article with the most views is a "news" type article, not evergreen. I just wrote this article June 20, 2011, but this article will be obsolete in August when the Michaels Passport to Fun craft program ends. But I imagine it'll get more views to the disappointment of readers when they see the free kids' craft projects are done.

A Summary of My Views - No, not my opinions; these are my top article views

This is a topic I've been thinking about a lot lately. Reading the comments, in addition to the lens, is very enlightening!

Thanks for the refs to these sites, still thinking about where to widen my net after some early disasters. Two you don't mention are Redgage, although good for photos, blogs and short articles are potential money spinners and good for backlinks and Best Reviewer. The latter doesn't seem that good for views but again OK for backlinks.

@Virginia Allain: I haven't had a lot of luck with StumbleUpon either, Virginia, and try to do my keyword research too to make Google a happy camper.

I've used Stumble Upon to get a lot of traffic for some bird photos on my blog, but it doesn't seem to bring the same results for Squidoo articles. I'm pretty dependent on favor from Google on Squidoo.

@Frischy: You've got that right, about the 4,000 people bored with their waffles. Incredible! And as for the views translating to $$$, hahaha! That's all I can say about that! Seriously, sometimes that happens and sometimes not.

This is interesting and unique! I laughed out loud at that waffle article getting so many views. That's kind of incredible. Just imagining 4,000 people feeling bored with their waffles this summer and googling waffle add-ins. I didn't even know that many people ate waffles! Very fun! You know, one of the interesting things to me about writing for the internet is that you can just never predict how something is going to do. There are always capricious surprises! Hope some of that translates into $$$ for you!
