Yeah there's a revolution going on but it's not all about Twitter and Facebook. People always thinks it's the technology but it's not. It's much bigger than that. The technology will always change but the fundamentals of business and marketing never will.
Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People is the best book you can read on the social generation. It was published in 1936. The golden rule is more apparent today than ever before. Word travels too fast to have a bad customer experiences, we love to tell our friends about those.
No advertising isn't dead, you just better be causing a ruckus with your advertising if you think your message is going to get through. Everyone can create a Facebook Page, everyone can Tweet, but it's those who do it in a memorable way that will be the influencer of tomorrow. Learning how to use the tools properly at a young age is important to ensure maximum potential of the future of your career. Read early and often. I hope this lens helps out. I think the marketing industry is going through a major evolution right now and the only way you or your company will be relevant in the next 10 years is if you begin educating yourself. Self-directed learning can now be accomplish from almost anywhere in the world, all that is required is a laptop and an internet connection. Information is now free so the challenge isn't finding information, it's filtering through the noise to find the right information.
