Ideas to help you sell your photos Online

Get started

Get Prepared

Go through your collection on photos and group on similar Categories - e.g Landscapes, animals, buildings, people.......

Remember though even if YOU don't like the photo, do NOT discard it, my FIRST photo I sold was one I didn't think much of.

But I suppose if we all had similar tastes it would be a very boring world.

As you see this picture is now copyrighted and protected.

I have submitted lots of photos in different portfolios and some photos have been rejected - maybe as there is already too much choice in the chosen category - don't be disheartened by this - this just means they are looking closely at your photographs, and keeping quality high.

Fotolia keep a good stock of photos and ensure their name for photos, I have found that by looking at other peoples files and searching key words helps me to work out what may be accepted, or that you may find a niche market for your unique images.

So I have spoken about Fotolia.......What is it.....Who are they?

This is how they describe themselves (I have taken prominent experts from their about us page.) And this is what I like about it.

- FOTOLIA is the first worldwide social marketplace for royalty free stock images, allowing individuals and professionals to legally buy and share stock images and illustrations.

- Fotolia offers the largest image bank of free and affordable royalty free photos and illustrations perfect for any medium, web or print.

- Photographers and designers constantly update Fotolia with thousands of new photos and illustrations each day, while photographers and designers receive commission from each photo sold and revenue from advertising on the free section.

- Fotolia provides a compromise between photographers and buyers, by protecting a photographer's intellectual property rights and offering high commissions, while legally lowering the price barrier so that everyone may enjoy/afford these beautiful images.

- Fotolia challenges the traditional closed agency model by offering the opportunity to monetize their talents to everyone, hobbyist or professional, whatever their fame, status, or size of portfolio may be.

It is FREE to set up your account and START UPLOADING IMMEDIATELY www.fotolia.com

Make money from selling your photos

I love flowers and so do lots of other people

I love taking pictures of flowers, and have found these grogeous prints to be very popular, especially for a bulk buy. Selling many of the same product, Like occaision cards or the Post Cards.

My "Niche" Market

Loch Lomond Scotland

As you see my photos are from around ***Loch Lomond*** in Scotland, a local (to me) beauty spot, which sits on the ***WEST HIGHLAND WAY.

It is a popular tourist attraction,

TOP TIP - research your chosen subject. And use as many relevan Keywords to describe the picture as possible.

Google loves pictures and this can help your pages in the search engines.

****Loch Lomond

Just some info:The main route along the loch is the A82 road which runs the length of its western shore, is absolutley stunning, For a long time this was a notoriously dangerous road, with the route clogged with tourists during the summer months. It was upgraded in the 1980s and 1990s, although the stretch north of Tarbet remains unimproved. (Believe me it's a nightmare) But the photos are worth the travel

The West Highland Way

Choosing a Niche Market for your photos

I am lucky I suppose I live on the border of the Famous West Highland Way walk, the opportunity for breathtaking shots is unlimited.

The west highland way is Scotland's first official long distance route links Milngavie to Fort William - a distance of 154km (96 miles) - from the northern outskirts of Glasgow, to the foot of Ben Nevis at Fort William.

The terrain ranges from lowland moors, dense woodland and rolling hills, to high mountainous regions in the Scottish Highlands. These environments provide habitats for a diverse range of wildlife species, both flora and fauna, and give photographers ample resources for stunning pictures

Taking Photos that Sell

Beautiful secenery

I love landscapes and flowers, which really are the two types of photos I focus on. So these are the ones I sell. Many others use quotes, slogans or funny text to make products from and appear to do just as well.

My Best Selling Photos

I took this picture of the white flower whilst on holiday in Jamacia, It is a favourite seller. The views from and around Loch Lomond are Breathtaking and always popular.

How 1 Person got Started in Selling Stock Photography - Learn from him how to sell your photos

As I wander around the web looking for great opportunities to help people get on their journey of seeling photos, I came across the author of Step-by-Step Guide to MicroStock Photography the author has written this as a guide to how he got started in selling stock.

I am most impressed not only does the Author give you the highs and lows, and his journey of selling his photos. He gives his personal experience and shares his actual earnings. The book is invaluable if you are selling your photos on-line, as he includes top Search Engine Optimization tips. Why would you even need to know this?

Many of try very hard to get our work seen, by others, and wonder how many are there in Google when you do a search these guys pop up all over the place and to be honest is their work as good as your? They have learned the basics of ensuring their photos for sale can be seen and found online.

So you do need to know how search engines work, the guide gives you a basic introduction to Keywords, and how to optimize your blog and posts, for you photos to get the best exposure needed.

There are thousands and thousands of talented yet to be discovered photographers, who give up way too early because they struggle with the on-line promotion of their photos. This book is what they need to read. If you don't have the basic knowledge of how on-line works then how is anybody going to know about your fabulous photos. Even if you are aware of Stock photo agencies which the author kindly shares his top list of the BEST stock market sites to put your photos on. The Keyword and SEO information is worth it alone.

I am self taught in SEO and have studied on-line marketing for a few years, the basics are fundamental to your success I just love the open and honest writing of the author who does not sugar coat the micro stock photography niche, but gives accurate information on how he has made a few mistakes learned by them, share with us so we don't make the classic newbie mistakes in fact the ebook explains it simply but precisely.

The best Camera for taking good Quality Photos

EASY to take fantastic pictures easily

What camera do I have - if I am honest - and I am, I actually had to go and get my camera to give you the precise model, how embarrassing, but as I said before I am writing this for others who, like myself have thousands of photos on their computer and could actually be unknowingly sitting on a small fortune.

Nikon D5200Digital SLR Camera

I will not get all technical on you - but for easy to use no nonsense- this is THE ONE - I LOVE THIS CAMERA! Point and shoot.

I thank my husband for buying it for me.

Cameras I have and still own. - Carry one everywhere

TOP TIP: always have a camera with you, keep one at work in your desk.

Believe me its great also having a pocket sized camera to carry with you on days out and about - even shopping in town. I still carry mine in my bag and car as you know how many times you think "I wish I had my camera"! and the opportunity is lost. I remember one time passing the loch and the sunset was the most beautiful I have ever seen - yep you guessed it, I never had my camera - and I had to watch the most beautiful sun going down with only a memory of it.

Camera Reviews - Digital cameras Are you confused?

From simple point and shoot to DSLRs. It does really depend on what you are taking pictures of, to what type of camera you are wanting. Do your research. Read everythign you can about the kind of camera. Some of my cameras are the only ones with a certain feature like my Olympus SZ-10 Which takes 3-d Pictures....yes really 3-d Pictures.

My new interest Landscapes - Very Loooonnngggg Landscapes

This is a picture of our beach at the bottom of our road. We recently moved to this area and I love taking these types of pictures.

I have not quite mastered the complete technique of stitching the photos together, but this is a not bad attempt. I cannot wait to get out and about and take even more pictures.

The area is near St Andrews in Scotland and the Scenery is just Stunning.

I literally have my camera everywhere and take pictures of everything. Since I work online I can find a use for photos, sometime s I have swapped photos with others for one I was needing. It is amazing what people are searching for.

I think that this is a comprehensive and well thought-out lens here. Very very interesting subject you have going here. Having been interested in photography for many years - especially black and white photography, I was intrigued by your article on how to go about selling your photographs.

One question, which I think someone else asked on here, do you still have the copyright to your work when you sell it? Or, does the copyright automatically transfer to the buyer? Anyway, good lens and keep writing.

@jethrosas: You can monetise your blog ith advertising etc. Selling your photos is another avenue to make money, if you are good then learn about SEO Search engine optimizastion. I started with pro-blogger, and followed Darren rowse in the beginning

http://www.problogger.net/ he also has a site about photography http://digital-photography-school.com/about-digita...

Learn as much as you can, as you find your own way forward and suitable for you, taking bits and pieces from others.

I use Squidoo to help send traffic to a lot to my sites, so article writing is an important part of workign online. (but places like fiver you can get people to do it for you ;)

good luck and do let us know how you get on, this is NOT overnight money I like to think of it as you are in it for the Looooonnnnngggg money! what I publish today will make me money, not toady but in the furture,

      Interesting lens.

I've been dabbling in microstock for the last several months, and now have photos online at five different microstock sites. Fotalia seems to be the toughest to get photos approved; they've only accepted 20 out of over 100 I've submitted. Bigstock and 123RF are much more lenient, approving 50 to 60 percent of what I upload. But my best moneymaker is Shutterstock. They've approved about half of what I have submitted, but have the highest number of sales (dollarwise and percentage) of all the places I have photos.

Thanks for all the info and tips!

I wonder if people knew about these ideas? Who knew that taking photos and selling them could be so fun and profitable :) Thanks for a great lens.

I have never thought of using anywhere other than Zazzle to make money from my images, but you have certainly given me some other alternatives to consider here :)

I won't, but my daughter has started selling photos online. I have sent her a link to this lens to help her advance her art and business.

Hi Lisa, I'm so glad I'm here again. I remember having some serious plans to take my chances with Zazzle based on your lens(es) and fabulous tips. I never did, sorry to admit. Now I think I'm ready to finally do something with many great photos my little family has gathered throughout the years. Thanks for reminding me how lazy I was :)

Beautiful lens. I have already created an account on Zazzle. But there is not any sell till now. Can you give me some ideas about it.

I will try out Zazzle for sure, the rest I need to figure out, and being new to Squidoo lot of my time is currently devoted to creating lenses and improving my writingstyle...

Adding- I've tried to bless the lens but it doesn't work for me today. ( I haven't blessed any others today so that's not the problem) I'll return !

Very informative. I might get round to organising myself to doing this one day. Good luck with this- you seem to be doing well. Blessed.

I list photos on RedGage and have actually made a bit of money. I'd love to sell my photos to some of the sites you've listed here. On my to do list!
