A Sewing Cafe Business

Gone are the days that fashion designing as a profession was regarded as one of the unpopular careers. There is ample opportunity for any fashion designer today.

A fashion designer or dressmaker can work in any one area in fashion industry. They can transfer their sewing skills by teaching, start a home sewing business, or run their own sewing cafe business.

Business in the fashion industry is just like any other business that you will need time to do. You will need new ideas and new ways of doing things to improve your sewing cafe business.

What Is A Sewing Cafe?

A sewing cafe is a drop in sewing shop. You can use the sewing cafe to do most of your sewing or crafty projects.

Everybody is welcome to a sewing cafe. As a total beginner, there is always somebody there to show you what you want to learn or do, for a fee of course. You can just walk in any time. No registration is required except you want to attend one of most of their sewing workshops. Or if you want to use any of the sewing equipment for your projects then there is a price for that, you will be charged per hour.

The sewing cafe provides all the sewing equipment, sewing accessories and the sewing service. They provide sewing machines, irons, clothes / pattern cutting large tables, tea or coffee, cake plus much more.

You can buy fabrics, sewing patterns, knitting patterns, knitting accessories and other craft things to complete any one of your projects.

There is closing and opening times for the sewing cafe.

For beginners or those that want to improve on their sewing ability, knitting or any other craft, there is always someone that can show you what to do, for a fee.

Creative Sewing Cafe Business Events

There are regular sewing workshops for people that wants to learn new sewing skills or brush up existing ones. So if you enjoy sewing, you can book one of the sewing workshops and help yourself to a cup or cups of coffee or tea as you learn to sew.

Other sewing inspirations have sprung up lately. There is what is called sewing parties ( the name explained itself ) - you sew as you party. There is social sewing - you sew as you socialize, sewing workshops ( we know already ), and sew by the hour - this is not a competition - it is just that a specific time is used for a particular sewing or crafty project.

How Sewing Cafe Works

Sewing cafe is just like any other shop you buy things from. You don't call the shops first to tell them you are coming. You just walk right in, buy, pay and go. So in sewing cafe, you drop in, tell the attendant what you want to do, for how long and after you finish, you pay and go.

There are many advantages of using a sewing cafe. You do not have to pay for any full sewing course, you only pay for the day you visit. You can choose to visit everyday, once or twice a week or never.

You learn from other people's sewing experiences and ideas while in sewing cafe.

Experience Required To Start A Sewing Cafe Local Business

You must not, but you should have a very good sewing experience. You can employ a dressmaker or fashion designer for this, but as you will be self employed, it will be a good idea if you have enough sewing knowledge to start with.

I call sewing cafe a local business, because most of the people that will come to your sewing business will be people from your local area, although other people will come from far and wide.

What is worth doing at all, is worth doing well. So the saying goes. If you have no sewing experience, you can train for it. Look for a good dressmaking school or fashion designing school. This may seem like you are wasting your time at the beginning. But you are not, it is what you can benefit from for a long time, even if you don't start a sewing business with the knowledge gained.

Do I Need Money To Start A Sewing Cafe Business?

Yes. You will need money. A bit more money. Why? Money to rent a shop - The shop must not necessarily be a large one at the beginning.

You will need money to sustain you for the first three months of starting your sewing cafe local business.

You will need money to sewing craft or sewing equipment and accessories, such as, sewing machines, inter lockers, embroidery machines, sewing patterns, large cutting and sewing tables, coffee machines, coffee, tea, cups plus much much more.

The money you will spend on these things will be the money you borrowed from bank, family/friends or any other source.

DIY Sewing In Sewing Cafe

Sewing cafe is not only a do-it-yourself : DIY kind of service. Those that don't know how to sew and want to mend their clothes, can always bring their garments for mending and then pay for the service. They can also give their fabrics, get measured and somebody will sew it for them.

What the sewing cafe business owner can do is that, they can ask dressmakers or people that can sew to register with them. So that when people bring any sewing job, any dressmaker will be contacted via email, phone or just ask to come in into the sewing cafe to see if she/he can take the sewing task.

The sewing job can be done in the sewing cafe or the dressmaker can take it home, to return it within a specified period of time. Depending on the requirement for the sewing, the dressmaker can be told to return the finished work within 3, 7 or two weeks to the sewing cafe so that the customer can be contacted to come and get his/her clothes.

The amounts the customers pay for these sewing works can be split between the sewing cafe business owner and the dressmakers, maybe 40/60, 50/50 or 60/40 respectively.

What a wonderful idea! Since everyone is so busy these days, a sewing cafe is perfect for people who want to learn how to sew or for the seasoned sewer who wants to socialize. Are they popular in big cities such as NYC and Chicago. If so, I would love to visit one when I go to NY to see my family. Thank you for sharing this.

Thank you for your comment alipuckett. Sewing cafe is relatively new, and many entrepreneurs are ceasing this business opportunity to make names and money for their business.

WOW! I've never heard of a sewing cafe, but the idea is magnificent! It's like an internet cafe, only replace computers with sewing machines. What a great idea!
