Simpsons Health and Safety Posters

Updated on February 19, 2013

Homer Helps Promote Health & Safety in the Workplace

Getting the health and safety out throughout the workplace can be quite hard. Some people don't pay any attention to the subject and it does have a stigma as being boring but the rules and regulations are there to help you and stop you from suffering an accident at work.

So how do you go about translating the health and safety messages you wish to convey in the workplace without coming across and boring and actually get people to take note, red and remember the messages displayed on the posters? Well, you employ a well known animated character and his friends to convey the messages across to employees of course. Everyone knows the face of Homer Simpson and is familiar with The Simpsons brand so using something that people can familiarise with and find funny is a great way to get the message across.

Also, the fact that Homer works in a nuclear power plant as a safety inspector and isn't the best at his job leads to many ideas and situations to use for poster ideas. As you can see on the image above, a spill hasn't been cleaned up and leads to a nasty slip and fall for Homer which Smithers witnesses.

Here's a look at some of my favourite examples from across the web.

Lifting Heavy Items

Lifting heavy items the wrong way can lead to serious back injuries. Here Homer demonstrates how not to do it whilst picking up a box of Super Heavy Metals. You should use your muscles to lift heavy items or boxes and bend your legs, not just use your back.

The message of the poster is clear for all to see; to get help when lifting heavy items.

Injuries in the Office

You may think that an office environment doesn't have many risks for injury but as you can see in this poster, Homer has suffered a lot of personal injuries from working in the office. This includes tripping over cables, sitting incorrectly and hurting your back and walking into open cabinets. The aim of this poster isn't necessarily to highlight the different hazards in the office but to highlight the fact that just because the environment you are working in doesn't seem overly dangerous, there are still risks.

So don't end up with a lot of injuries like Homer and reduce hazards in the office.

Escape Routes

The use of humour throughout these posters show different messages and risks in an over the top manner but this can work in getting people to notice the message and actually remember it.

This poster for knowing your safety escape route is clearly over the top and shows Homer scaling down the side of a building using a makeshift rope out of sheets whilst Mr.Burns looks on out the window. The message is clear though and is bound to cause anyone who sees it to have a little chuckle.

Reduce Hazards

This is a generic poster that can be placed in any work place and show the importance of reducing workplace hazards and how this can be done by cleaning up after yourself. Whilst dripping an ice cream throughout the workplace like Homer isn't likely to really happen, people can often forget to clean up other spills or leave items in the wrong place which can lead to accidents at work.

Make sure you clean up after yourself so other people don't suffer an accident due to your laziness.

Eye Injury

Out of all the examples on this lens this is my favourite and that's mainly down to

Lenny and Carl being my favourite Simpsons characters.

The poster is to highlight the importance of wearing the correct eye safety equipment when doing any work where there is risk of damaging the eyes. The poster shows Lenny sporting an eye patch and says that if he had worn the right protection, it would have looked better than the eye patch he now has to wear.

Simple. Informative. Funny.

So which of these is your favourite and do you have any ideas for any more?

Are these posters made by the creators of the Simpsons or not. Is that illegal if it si not? Can I make a volunteering poster for my charity using Homers picture and post it around locally?
