Working for any job agency in the UK will require you to register with the agency so that they can match your skills with the needs of their clients.

Many people have taken up agency work also known as temporary employment so that they can supplement their income.

There are many types of work agencies that offer work assignments to its registered temporary workers.

These are some of the work assignments you can be assigned to depending on which agency you are working for: driving, retail, security, cleaning, factory, office plus many more.

You should know the kind of job you are able to do and what type of work you are looking for.

The first thing is to register with a particular agency of your choice, this you do, by completing a job application form, in some cases, you may be interviewed by one of the agency consultants, and probably complete a skills test.

You will be required to provide references from previous employers or colleges together with a covering letter of up to 2 or more years experience. Know that your references will be verified before you are given your first assignment.

Before Taking Up Work Assignment

If you are an agency worker, and you have been given all clear to start your temporary job, make sure that you read your contract very well. Your terms of temporary job engagement will include:

  • Your pay information, including when and the method of payment
  • The work assignments
  • Sickness absence
  • How you should conduct yourself on work assignments
  • Time sheets
  • Termination info

During Agency Work Assignments

  • Punctuality to your place of assignment is very important. If for any reason, you are not able to attend an assignment or if you know you may be late, you should call your temporary work consultant no less than 24 hours notice, so that they can send another worker to replace you or inform their client that they should not expect anyone from the agency.
  • Know that as a temporary agency worker, the client might ask you to work additional hours. This calls for you to be flexible when any overtime is required.
  • Try and find out the break time from any client when you are sent to any work assignment. This will help you not to go on unauthorized break, therefore causing some kind of query from the client to your work agency.
  • When you are sent to a new work assignment that you've never been to before, get to know the layout of the workplace, so that you can familiarize yourself with some key places at work such as the toilets, fire exit and other areas.
  • Try to establish a good relationship with your new work colleagues. Whatever you don't understand, ask someone.
  • Avoid making unnecessary phone calls except in an emergency which you will have to first ask for permission.
  • Confidentiality about information you come across at your place of assignment plays an important part when you are booked and dispatch for an assignment. Any information you come across must not be told to anyone.
  • At the end of your job assignment, make sure that your work area is tidy and clean, and that you have finished your job for the day. Don't just walk off after you complete your assignment, let the unit manager check to see if your job is okay.
  • Importantly, ensure that the client sign your time-sheet and bring your copy to your work agency branch.
