Can you really have an Online Income? 5 Warnings for Beginners who want to make money online

Updated on December 29, 2012

Do you get all those emails in your inbox promising you how you could make $300 a day with just 20 minutes of work? Or how a teenager or single mom has managed to make a million in a few weeks of working on the internet? I do. And I have to confess that I became a victim of some of these scams.

Indeed, Making money online is an increasingly popular way to find income. There are a few who have met with overwhelming success, although most people like myself will realize that is it not as easy as we think or as easy as we are told it will be. I do not claim to be an expert an any way, but I would like to share my experiences with making money online in this short hub, to help others who are wondering about the truth about making money online.

So here goes - 5 truths that beginners need to know about making money online.

1. There are often hidden costs that surface once you buy a product

Sometimes, you have to pay a one - off sum, but sometimes, you will be asked to pay a few dollars and after a time period or one week, a bigger sum of money will be deducted from your account. Be really careful, and read all the small print and be alert if you receive emails from paypal to say that you have made an automatic payment- make sure this is what you have signed up for.

Very often, the softwares and products that you buy seem to promise that you do not need a webpage, a hosting account, an existing product to sell..... be very careful when reading these claims. Very often, after buying the software you will be required to buy hosting or make a further payment to access an elite more powerful version.... I do wish more internet marketers would be more upfront with their products, but sadly this is not always the case. As beginners, we need to be very careful about this. And we need to protect ourselves by being aware of the various marketing ploys that are used.

2. Many products are made for Windows Operating Systems

For the Mac users out there, this is especially relevant to you - many of the softwares that are sold out there are not compatible with Macs. Often you do not know until you have bought the software. So do be prepared. There systems on the mac eg. Bootcamp that you can use, though it can be a little tricky to figure out.

3. Be discerning when you evaluate a product

It is not uncommon for internet marketers to tell a rags to riches story that inspires you to want to be just that story. It is also widely common for the internet marketers to say that you can start making money i a few hours, with a few clicks of a mouse.... bear in mind that these claims may or may not be true  - as they are the experts and the gurus who know their trade inside out and who know exactly how to package a particular product to make it sell. All the sales figures that are put on the marketing page are probably the figures of the top seller - average joes like us need to learn the ropes and wait before we will probably see any results.

4. Be realistic about making any money on the internet

There are probably a lot of us who are frustrated that we haven’t been able to kick start an online business. The fact that many softwares that we buy seem to promise that we might make money within a few hours of our purchase only causes us to harbor unrealistic expectations. Patience is key! Apparently it does take some time for the search engines to organise your website, and so this requires perseverance.

5. Ensure there is a money back guarantee

I can’t stress how important this is, in light of what we have discussed earlier. There are many businesses online that sound really really promising. The truth is that this is probably too good to be true! Sometimes, it is hard to discern if the business is a scam or a real deal, and it is important that you can get out if you realize that what you have bought neither delivers nor meets your needs.

Make sure that you can have your money back if something goes wrong. Most business with clickbank do offer this option, and make sure you know how to use this for your advantage.

Well, do you have any more advice and truths about making money online that you would like to share? Leave your comments below and I am sure it would be helpful to other people!

      Thanks for a great Hub!

Another good rule of thumb is to ignore the hype and set realistic expectations for online earnings. If it's too good to be true, you may want to steer clear.

The fish cartoon is cute. :o)

"Ensure there is a money back guarantee" is good advice. One good thing about buying through Clickbank (for example) is that they will give you a refund if you are not satisfied.
