Don't Let Your Creative & Artistic Talents Go To Waste! Turn Them Into A Business!

Welcome! I'm Monique and I LOVE arts & crafts. There are so many creative & artistic people out there who could be turning their God-given talents into a business and don't do anything about it. Why?!? Sometimes we all need a good kick in the rear to get us motivated and moving in the right direction. I was one of these people about two years ago. When your mom AND a psychic tells you, "You're blocking your blessings..."? It's time to take action. Whether you draw, paint, sew, cook, do anything arts & crafts related or maybe you do a little of everything? PLEASE KNOW that you and your art deserve to be seen. There is always going to be someone out there who loves and appreciates what you do so make it happen!

On this page, you'll learn a little bit about me, my side business (I make hair accessories & more!) that I started not too long ago and the things I've done to get to where I am today. I'm still new in the game and will always have lots to learn but if there is ANYTHING AT ALL that I can share from what I have learned so far then this is what this page is for.

Where do I start?

Research of course! Start by figuring out at least ONE THING that you can create with your creative and artistic talents that could possibly be a hot seller. Why only ONE thing you ask? Because, trust me, it will snow-ball into MANY things in due time. LOL. I'll post a link to my shop later to prove it. How I got the idea to make hair accessories? I have no clue how I even thought of it but I'm so glad that I did! I typed in, "how to make hair accessories" in the online search engine and bam! I came across this awesome D.Y.I. website called, "Cut Out + Keep". Cut Out + Keep is FULL of awesome tutorials on how to make just about anything in the arts & crafts world! You can upload pictures of your own art and share with others how you did it or simply browse through other people's creations and learn something new.

When I first browsed through Cut Out + Keep, I was inspired! I wanted to try to make the hair accessories that I saw! I went to my local arts & crafts store (Michael's), bought some materials and got started right away. We all get inspiration from somewhere, yes, but I always keep this in mind when I make my creations: "How can I make that hair bow but make it even BETTER?" Sometimes it's great to think outside the box and try to think of something NEW that will knock someone's socks off (Okay, that sounds a bit dramatic but I'm trying to motivate you here!). Thinking this way is great because it keeps those creative & artistic juices flowing at all times and you end up creating some amazing things.

What ever your talent is, don't just go to one website...go to MANY. Learn as much as you can. Even YouTube.com is a wonderful source to learn new things in your craft.

Once You've Created The Goods-Sell Them!

For starters, it's always a good idea to tell your friends, family, co-workers or ANYONE about your art and what you have to offer because there will always be someone interested in what you have and they can buy from you and tell others about you too ;-). Get some business cards made at vistaprint.com and pass them out. GET SERIOUS about your business because you're worth it. ANYTHING CREATIVE you can think up to get yourself KNOWN? DO IT.

Another way to sell yours goods, of course, is online! There are MANY, MANY, MANY (did I mention, "MANY"?) venues to sell online and more and more are popping up every day: I've tried, ebay.com, etsy.com, tradepal.com, yardsellr.com, bigcartel.com, artfire.com & the one I LOVE the MOST and have a shop on this very day....Storenvy.com!

Storenvy.com has been around for just a few years and I see it being around for many more. What's great about it you ask?

1. It's 100% free to list your items for sale.

2. You can totally customize your store and add some color to it for goodness sakes.

3. It has many great features including a dashboard that shows you how many people are viewing your page daily.

So, I highly recommend Storenvy.com. But, do what works for you. Look around first. Just make sure you decide on Storenvy.com in the end ;-). LOL.

Promotion!

In the past, I wouldn't take promotion of my art seriously. I would simply list my items up for sale in my shop and just hope that they would sell on their own. WRONG! You HAVE to put in some work TOO in order to get those sales faster because let me tell you the cold-hard TRUTH about something: It can take up to FIVE YEARS to get an online business going (meaning a steady business)! Yes, it's true! I've read articles on it posted by other online sellers in the Storenvy.com forums. This is why promoting your business is so important so that you can get yourself seen and eventually well-known. There are MANY ways to promote your business and we could probably brain-storm and come up with THOUSANDS of ways to do so but we'll keep it simple for today. Let's start with four that I like:

1. I already mentioned business cards. I got mine done at vistaprint.com. Pass them out to everyone you can who you think would be interested in your products.

2. Posting items for sale often in your new shop is ALSO a great way to promote yourself because guess what? They may not be buying from you just yet but if they see your new items at the top of the page all the time they're going to remember your name and come back when they need you ;-).

3. My new love: Wanelo.com. This site is AMAZING. It's just like Pinterest.com but better for your online business because EVERYTHING posted on Wanelo.com are awesome finds from ONLINE STORES ONLY. I noticed my views went up a LOT since joining Wanelo.com and I even recently had an item from my shop trending (it got lots of "likes"). So definitely check out Wanelo.com.

4. Social networks. Facebook, Twitter, My Space, etc. Start pages dedicated ONLY to your art. People who love your stuff can follow you and vice versa. People who ALSO have a business can follow you and vice versa and you can even promote each other!

So yes, PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE! Very important.

NEVER Give Up On Your Business

You see the picture of the Mermaid Bow at the very top of this article? You see the picture of the Frankenstein picture frame? I CREATED those! I sure as HECK ain't gonna give up on my business because I know I have something AMAZING to offer the world. THIS is what would have been left behind if my mom and that psychic didn't wake me up! THIS is the attitude you must have. KNOW that you are worth it. If you feel like your stuff isn't good enough then fix it! I'm always improving and to this day I still find things I've made in the past and I shake my head in disbelief and wonder what the heck I was I thinking. LOL. Oh well, life goes on, keep on moving forward and create some amazing things because the world needs to see you.
