Earn By Answering Questions: My Experience With Weegy
You Can Be An Expert, Too
I became an "expert" in August, 2010. (Not to be confused with a ouija expert, that is.)
Expert in what, you ask? Oh, in everything under the sun, of course.
Actually, I just selected "all categories" under Areas of Expertise, finished filling out the rest of the sign-up information, opened an Expert tab and began answering questions as they popped up.
And that's really all there is to it. Anyone and everyone can be a Weegy expert and get paid to answer questions and give advice. In my first month on Weegy, I earned $58, plus a points contest bonus.
Here I'll explain how Weegy works and how you can earn a little extra money while you're online anyway, doing other things.
Have You Used Weegy? - A visitor poll....
Have you used Weegy?
How Weegy Works
The basic idea
Like I said, it's simple. People stop by and ask questions, and those of us who sign up as experts answer those questions. That is, if the artificial Weegy, which is powered by an advanced search engine, doesn't give a good answer first.
You see, as questions are asked and answered, all that information is added to the knowledge base, and the artificial Weegy becomes smarter (well ... maybe). She then tries to answer some questions on her own. (Yes, it's a female artificial being, and she talks too. You'll see what I mean if you ask her a question.)
Here's how Weegy.com explains the website...
The concept, in broad terms, is:
- Build a simple 'google-like' web portal where users can engage Weegy in problem-solving conversation.
- Recruit 'Weegy experts' in a variety of specific knowledge categories. (e.g. automobile repair, financial advice, health and fitness, and countless others categories).
- When Weegy cannot continue a conversation (as will often happen when Weegy is young and impressionable), she will immediately contact the first available expert to help her continue the conversation.
- All conversation threads become a part of Weegy's knowledge and understanding of the world, and help her to become smarter. She will learn by listening to users and Weegy experts talk with each other; no other special setup or maintenance is required to build Weegy's intelligence.
Read more about Weegy technology.
Now, Weegy doesn't always get the answers correct (actually, she's wrong more often than right at the moment, as far as I've seen), and oftentimes she doesn't even try to answer, so those questions are offered to online experts.
Not that there's any guarantee their answers are correct either. But an expert can look things up online or elsewhere after accepting a question. So we can only hope so-called experts (including me) will do their best to give accurate answers. Exoerts can also include links to more information and sources to verify an answer. Just copy and paste the URL right into the answer box.
**Questions can be asked right on the site, or users can call or text Weegy at 707 GoWeegy (707-469-3349). They can use Skype as well.
Once you've signed up and filled in your expert information, click on "Expert" and leave that open in a separate tab while you do whatever else you do online. In fact, keep a couple of experts tabs open--I'd say no more than three, though--so you'll receive questions more often.
If you want to see what other questions have been asked on Weegy and perhaps add your own two cents to those conversations, click on the Archive link, read what's been asked and answered (and some will not have been answered), and, if you want to offer some information or advice, click "comment" and do so. Now, you won't get paid for participating in conversations like these that weren't offered to and accepted by you when they first popped up, but you will receive points (up to 100 total each month) for participating in them.
A Tip For Weegy Experts
You'll know you have been offered a question when you here a "DING" sound. So be sure to keep the volume on your computer turned up.
Once you hear the ding, you have 15 seconds to accept the question before it disappears and is passed to another expert. So if you think you can answer or at least find the answer, go ahead and accept. Don't look for the answer first, or you'll never have time to accept the question.
Expert Information - Here's some of mine....
A Tip For Weegy Experts
You'll receive more questions if you set your area of expertise to "All Categories." If you receive a question you can't or don't want to answer, just don't accept it. Better to have the choice than to receive fewer opportunities to answer questions.
Understanding Weegy Earnings and Points - This is my earnings and points information after a few days shy of my first month on Weegy....
Weegy experts are paid U.S. $0.20 (20 cents) for each conversation they accept and reply to, EXCEPT for those questions posted by other experts. Answers given to questions asked by other Weegy experts are not eligible for payment.
Those Weegy experts who've been around for a while and have a history of providing useful (and correct) answers and advice can become Weegy Pro or Weegy Research experts and earn a higher rate for questions they respond to.
When a user pays a small free to pose a question to an expert of his or her choice, that expert will also receive a higher rate, and that amount will depend upon the amount of time the user pays for.
Points are accrued in a few different ways. When you accept and respond to a question, you receive points. You'll receive more points (5, actually) if the user gives your answer a positive rating. You can receive up to 100 points for responding to archived conversations, and 20 points for each new expert who signs up under your referral link.
What IS the purpose of points on Weegy?
There's a monthly points contest, which I'll explain in a minute. You can earn extra money in that contest.
Also, when you reach 1,000 points, you'll see your level go from 0 to 1. I just passed the 2,000 point mark and my level changed to 2. At this time, I don't actually KNOW what the levels mean, but I've been told by a couple of other Weegy experts who've been using the site for a while that they'll eventually come into play. I'll have to update this page with what that actually means when it happens. But I would guess that it's one way you get chosen as a Weegy Researcher and earn a higher rate.
(Feb. 1st) I've earned a total of $257.20 so far on Weegy since I joined in mid-August. I keep the Weegy site up in the background while I'm working online and answer questions as they pop up with a *ding!* I've also earned extra money by placing first, second or third in the monthly points contest several times.
The Monthly Points Contest
That's me, Ramkitten, on top of the leader board in mid-September....
Will it last?
I don't know if the points contest will be phased out at some point (pun intended), but right now you can earn bonuses of up to $30 for monthly points. Accrue those points by accepting and answering questions that are offered directly to you (listen for that "ding!") and by participating in conversations you find in "Archive," as I mentioned above. You'll also earn 20 points for referrals--people who sign up to be Weegy experts using your referral link. (You'll find your referral link under your Account section.)
Get an extra five points every time a user gives an answer of yours a positive rating.
There is now a 100-point per month limit on points specifically earned from participating in archived conversations. But those points will still add to your total point count.
Pictured here, you'll see the top-ranked experts by monthly points at a particular time. See the difference between monthly points and total points? Your total will continue to go up as you participate on Weegy.com, but your monthly points will be re-set to zero at the beginning of each month.
A Tip For Weegy Experts
Don't give ridiculous answers or repeat what someone else has answered just to accrue points. The Weegy Team is watching, and you can get your account deleted. I've read on their blog that that's happened.
The Kinds of Questions Asked
From the sublime to the ridiculous
When someone asks a question, they first choose the category their question best fits into. It seems that many people don't bother choosing a category, so most questions fall under "All Categories." But you can click on the various categories when looking for conversations to participate in and see what's been posted specifically under those headings.
Now, I've seen all sorts of questions. Some are very legitimate, such as questions about grammar and chemistry, math problems, questions about history, famous people, health, and so forth. And then I've seen questions--sometimes asked OVER and over again--that are just completely stupid and occasionally even offensive. (If you do see something ridiculous or rude, I would suggest clicking on the Contact link at the very bottom of the page and letting Weegy Support know about it. I've received messages back from the Weegy team, thanking me for the heads up.) There are real people of all ages, from all over the world, from all backgrounds and mentalities using this site, so you're going to get all kinds of questions and requests for advice, some of which are very strange. But, hey, give an answer and you get paid if they're not a Weegy expert themselves.
As a Weegy expert, how do I ask questions?
Just go to the Weegy home page (just click on the word Weegy on the navigation bar) and fill in the form. Then wait for Weegy or another live expert to answer.

Getting Paid for Answering Questions
When and How
You receive payment via Paypal when your account reaches $20 or more. You should receive payment on or about the 15th of each month, provided you've met that $20 limit. (Added later: Weegy does pay monthly, but there isn't a set date. It's been somewhere between the 20th and 23rd for the past few months.)
So, you'll need to set up a Paypal account if you don't already have one, and enter that Paypal email address in your Account Settings.
A Tip For Weegy Experts
After accepting a question, don't click Enter (on your keyboard or on the answer box) unless you've finished your response. If you hit Enter with the intention of adding a paragraph break, it'll post your answer before you're ready. Just don't bother trying to make paragraphs. (You CAN click Enter and make paragraphs when answering archived questions, however.)
What Do YOU Think of Weegy?
Do you have a generally favorable or unfavorable opinion of Weegy.com?
I think Weegy.com is okay....
Give Weegy a Try
Ask a question. Get an answer. Weegy.com is the easiest and fastest way to get answers to your questions, by providing a mashup of several technologies including an AI-enabled Q&A knowledgebase and integrated chat with live experts.
Just a Heads-Up
People will come to the site thinking that Weegy is psychic and, by default, that Weegy experts are psychic. So you'll get those kinds of questions. You can respond and explain that that's not the case and ask them if they need advice or if they have a different type of question. If not, you still earn from answering.
Also, some users will write their question in a language other then English. You can ask them to please re-state their question in English and many usually will do that.
