What Does Your Signature Say About You?

Updated on September 9, 2014

Why and How Can You Detect Personality in a Signature?

The art of reading handwriting is called graphology.

The logic is pretty simple.

Handwriting is nothing but an output of the electrical impulses of the brain.

Since it is an output, one can gauge the person/individual from the handwriting.

Now, why focus on the signature?

In an ever-increasingly electronic world, you just don't write that often. You email, you text, and you surf. In all of these activities, you express yourself through manufactured fonts, and our society is becoming unused to expressing itself through handwriting.

However, you still sign documents, contracts, applications, and more. That is where your personality is visible.

Think about your childhood. In the early years of school, you were taught how to write through repeated exercises. Your teachers and parents may have spent a considerable amount of time trying to get you to write in that particular style of "standard" handwriting that everyone desires. But here is the kicker: all of us wound up with our own style of handwriting, didn't we?

That's because we are individuals, with our own personalities, desires, abilities, and experiences. How your handwriting differs from the "standard" handwriting is nothing but your individuality expressed on paper.

Your signature is a snapshot of that personality.

The Basics

I have written a separate article detailing some of the basic rules of handwriting analysis. Some of these rules apply to signatures as well, and you may be interested in learning more about it here.

However, there are some characteristics that apply only to signatures, and those are the ones that we will be examining here. They are:

  1. Size of the signature
  2. Size of the first letter of the signature
  3. Slant of the signature
  4. Use of first name, last name, or initials
  5. Underlining of the signature
  6. Dotting of the signature
  7. Use of any backward loops in the signature

1. Size of the Signature

The rule of thumb is this: the bigger the signature, the more gregarious and outgoing the person.

A smaller signature can be an indication that a person is:

  • A miser with money, emotions, or self
  • An introvert
  • Unassuming

Whether a signature is large or small can reveal aspects of a person's personality
Whether a signature is large or small can reveal aspects of a person's personality

2. Size of the First Letter of the Signature

The size of the first letter gives you an idea of what the person thinks or feels about himself or herself in relation to the rest of the world.

The difference between the highest and lowest points of the letter is the percieved difference felt between the self and others. This is sometimes also used to gauge ego.

If the first letter is capitalized, then the person has more pronounced self-esteem.

If the first letter is in lowercase, then the person is more grounded.

3. Slant of the Signature

The slant of a signature can reveal aspects of a person's mindset. Here are three possible slants and their meanings:

  • An upward slant shows ambition and a forward-thinking individual.
  • A straight signature indicates balance in a person's approach to life and work.
  • A downward slant, i.e. the signature starts on the line and moves below may show someone who lacks self-esteem.

4. Use of First Name, Last Name, or Initials

Most people use both their first and last name in their signatures, so when they do something else, it says a lot. Here are some variations and what they mean:

  • Writes only the first name: the person has a strong sense of self and does not take stick too closely to family. These people are independent in thought, are very conscious of the money they make, and will most likely move out to work independently.
  • Writes only the last name: the person is a family person. This indicates a strong love of and loyalty to family, but this person may have issues surviving outside the protection that family provides.
  • Writes first initial, followed by full last name: the person has a balanced approach to life.
  • Writes last name, followed by first name: the person puts family before self.

5. Underlining of the Signature

Some people incorporate a flourish in their signatures to underline their name. Here are the meanings of some variations of the underline:

  • No underline: this indicates an unassuming person. People who do not underline their signatures are not too fussy and do not need to impress others with their accomplishments.
  • One line below the signature: the person likes people to know he/she exists. In order to ensure that their presence is felt, people who use one underline are bound to talk about themselves, but not to the point of excess.
  • Two lines below the signature: the person loves to take credit, and will ensure people know the favors he/she has done for them.
  • A line that cuts through the signature: people who do this may tend to go back on their word and generally have a tendency to contradict themselves.

6. Dotting of the Signature

Some people will dot their signature upon completion. Most will do so after scratching a line under the signature.

The line is to ensure that they underline their presence, but a dot is worse. Here it is trying to say:

  • One dot: "You should know who I am, what I do, and what I have done, but here is another reminder."
  • Two dots: "Don't forget who did this."

7. Use of Any Backward Loops in the Signature

A backwards loop could mean that the person is any of the following:

  • Someone who thinks a lot about everything
  • Someone who will take everything upon himself or herself and will be miserable until everyone is happy
  • Someone who will go about explanations in a roundabout way
  • Someone who may fib if the situation requires

How to Analyze Handwriting Yourself

Handwriting or signature analysis is not an exact science. I recommend that you take note of these seven characteristics in the signatures of your acquaintances and draw your own more detailed conclusions about how it reveals their personalities. I started many years back, and over the years I began to piece together patterns that I observed.

Before you begin your own observations, consider the following guidelines:

  • You can use a person's signature to try to gain an initial impression, but please do not use it as a criteria for hiring.
  • After you have gained an initial impression of a person based off of his or her signature, don't stop there. Let that person's actions continue to contribute to your mental picture of his or her character.

Make Changes to Your Own Personality

Here is the fantastic part!

You can change your own personality by changing your signature. You will find that your signature is an ingrained habit. But it is possible to change, slowly and a little at a time.

Leave your comments below, and I will tell you what you can do.

Very Interesting article! Though I do not normally believe in reading the handwriting, as mine changes, I think, based on the mood and circumstances, I found quite a good insight at reading the signature traits.

hi this is article is very useful.

In my signature I make a big backward loop first I write first letter of my name then go back and write my full last name. Then I underline last name and put a dot just under my first name... almost every mark you described is useful for me... I need some more specific analysis... thanks...

what a bunch of bullshit. To obvious...a large signature means someone wants to be noticed? what ever. Who knows what goes on in peoples psychology? i wonder if anyone actually did any real analysis to see if a third party psychologist would actually make the same determination after performing psychoanalysis on people. Don't waste your time analyzing your own signature or anyone elses. Just feel who you are! Someones personally and their signature can be related but they can also be very mutually exclusive.

      Hi...

      It's awesome...

I mark my sign. with my full first name + Kr(middle name short) + full last name.. like MohitKrChilKoti ,with an upward slant and an underline and that underline strikes through both K's lower backward slated line in my signature...I use capital K's in my sign. and I stretch my K little longer than usual....which then gets cut by the underline....My signature matches my handwriting but made a little faster pace and sign. is pretty readable...

I write First letter 'M'in Capitals little bigger in size with noticable bend at the end just before it touches the 'o'....Could you please tell me about my personality.....

      Thanks In Advance....

I had my signature read once by a professional. She told me that I was impatient for something to happen in the future (at the time I was about to start college) and that I was a good storyteller. Which was great because I was just starting with my novel and wasn't sure if I had what it takes. It's amazing how much you can learn about someone just by their signature.

I have two signatures, one for boring official things and one for everything else such as my artwork. In both with my last name, which is Stock, the cross on the t goes all the way through the k and comes back ever so slightly. The end of the k is long. I write Jill and then my last name under it in the art signature and finish it off with a big heart around the entire thing. No site seems to have anything to say about these details. What do they seem to me to you?

    • prabhjotbedi profile image
      Author

Prabhjot Bedi 6 years ago from chandigarh

your creative flourish is on display! our signatures tend to show off our mental state. most stars, movies, music or sports who do a lot of autographs will invariably have larger autograph signatures so to speak with big bold lines or smileys etc.

The persona takes over and the signature captures it. Your big heart is just that, the artist in you, the creative person in you being captured on paper.

The last name below the fist name could have either of two meanings. 1. you are more yourself or you think of yourself as self made or an individual different from your family OR 2. you accept that your family is your support system but what you are, YOU are and not made because of the family.

As for the cross on the t, since it appears on the formal signature too, then it is a sign of aggressiveness or even temper. If the stroke is powerful and long, it could indicate that you are vocal or expressive when angry. You do let people know don't you!

      I hope this helps.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a note!

Yes, I think that's more along the lines of what I mean :-o Does it mean that they think less of me, because my first letter is smaller? Perhaps they think I have high ideals, because of the emphasized height of 'f'?

    • prabhjotbedi profile image

@Jovian :) It is not that they think small of you coz of your smaller letter (first one), it is that your behaviour/mannerisms are such that you may come across as meek.

      Hi,

I use my first name as a signature with "S" in capital and everything else as a small.

      I write "r" in 4th ABCD.

I also underline the name from "r" in the end to "S" in starting and back to "r"

Plz describe my character and pros and cons of the same.

Also suggest if any changes need to be done for future.

I am a bit confused about my personality, or maybe not!! I am assertive, but hesitate to assert & when I do assert, it comes out all wrong and all hell breaks lose. I want to laugh, but I hold myself back, feeling self-conscious. Things like that, you know? Maybe there is something about myself that I don't understand. Can you help me? May I also send you a scanned copy of my signature for you to analyse? Please let me know. Thanks in advance,Swati

How lobg did it take you to learn to read signeratures? and also, I noticed that you mentioned that one could improve oneself to make a better signature...so can one change their signature to fit the profile or "personality" they want to be...does it cause a pshycological change

    • prabhjotbedi profile image
      Author

Prabhjot Bedi 5 years ago from chandigarh

@Carol I got hooked by a simple 2 page description of it in one of Bejan Daruwala's forecast books. I thought the thing was a laugh until i tried it on people around me and my friends.

Since then, I have spent considerable time learning from books and websites but I have over the years made some observations for myself. Everything I read, I counter checked and only accepted once I saw it could be applied to people around me.

You can change your handwriting to change your self. for e.g. if someone wants to be a lot more careful and detail oriented or would like to not be careless anymore, I suggest they start by doting all their 'i's and crossing all their 't's.

Just that small change can prove very effective.

      hope this helps.

      Cheers!

Bit of an interesting one! i want to change it since ive had it for many years... its just become an easy signiture to do now.. and just don't feel bothered to change it. haha. Very interesting.

@Jolene.T do send it to me on mail@prabhjotbedi.com. regarding you changing you signature or doodling, you have already answered it yourself. our handwriting changes based on the task at hand, the mood and the reason why we write too. for e.g. most people sign official documents - loan, property etc - with a lot more care and hence the signature is sharper and with a decent amount of pressure on the paper.

however, if you were just doing something that you may trash later or not show to anyone else, it would could be messy, illegible.

      Graphology

      Prof. Wingle – Graphology professor

Practicing SMS gradually kills the speed of writing in exam, time will not be sufficient. Impact on brain.

Hand is only tool writing comes from brain.

Minor changes in your handwriting/Signature can bring major success in your life

Handwriting changes from time to time i.e. 4 times in life

      1) First change upto 8 years do not get grip

      2) Second change 8 to 13 years teenage physical, biological handwriting changes

      3) Third change 14 to 27 years major changes

      4) Fourth change 28 to 45 to 50 years age may change or may not.

      Change of handwriting is myth

Slant, size, degree of pressure, spacing between words does not change

Look of handwriting may change but not the basics of the hand writing of the individual

Key letters of handwriting does not change even hand left or right changes

      What is graphology

Graphology is the Greek for writing

      Logy means studying

      First symbol is circle

      Second symbol is arrow

Alphabets invented by chines however Europeans continued research

First 58 alphabets reduced to 48 then to 28. from 28 to 26 alphabets

Each alphabet i.e. a to z reflects head to toe.

      Upper zone d t h k l

      Middle zone a e I o u s m n

      Lower zone y g

Entire 3 zone letter is f

Problem with knee y, g lower zone

      Thinking with upper zone

All zones dominating handwriting size is big may be 1 cm indicates leadership qualities

      What is grapho theraphy

Signature – sing + Nature – Image shown to public

      Sign means symbol

Nature means it reveals the nature of symbol

By making small changes in your sign can change your self

      Handwriting – how it works?

Your nervous system acts as wire from brain to hand. A thought in your brain is transmitted by electrical impulses thought nervous system and fibers of your body, arms and fingers. The fingers are only vehicles that put in writing. Handwriting is known as brain writing.

      Graphology today

      -Is more into our lives

-to improve health to improve prosperity

-to deal with fears and phobias

      -to do effective self management

-to develop and achieve the goal

Loops in letter t, incomplete y, left margin irregular indicates fear

Any loops in letter t and l people will have fear of imagination

My signature has always been tight and neat, but big on the flourishes. The basic examples that you gave really fit me pretty well, particularly the part about backwards loops. I love ending my "a" and "h" with an exaggerated loop backwards to cross any t's (and not, for consistency). Every bullet explained me to the T! I am curious though--how might you view a person who loves writing backwards and switching to the left hand for fun? I have started doing that for my signature so that it is harder to copy my signature, but I wonder what that says about me as a person?

      Thank you for your time!!!

      Hi Prabhjot,

Thanks for this wonderful article on signatures. I would like to know about my signature style. I only use my first name while signing. I have a slightly upward slant and underline my signature which sometimes cut through the alphabet "J" and the stroke of my "i" is going upwards. I will ensure that I will draw the horizontal line below "J". I want to know if the way the "i" (curve going upwards) is written is okay. Also if I underline my signature with two horizontal strokes will it bring a positive difference in my life. Thank you for your guidance.

A child is trained to write a standard way in school. Eventually, he or she makes changes, varies from the way they learned. When this variation is repeated, it reflects a specific personality trait. For example, if the child was taught to slant the writing slightly rightward and now repeatedly writes leftward, some type of ‘pulling back into oneself” is happening. If the‘t’ bars according to the school model should be perfectly placed and are now written rightward, far-flung from the stem, some type of aggression, anger is present. The rule of thumb: knowing what form of handwriting the person learned and how the writer now repetitively diverges reveals the personality.
