What Makes The Most Money on Squidoo: 250th Lens

Updated on January 16, 2015

My 250th Lens: Which Subjects are the Most Profitable on Squidoo?

After a little over two years with Squidoo I have now created my 250th lens. Rather than just make another lens, I thought I would look back at what I have done and which lenses and subjects have been most successful. Which lenses have had the most traffic and which have made the most money. This is just my experience and obviously you may have very different ideas, so please tell me which of your lenses have been the best performers below.

After three months I had made just $0.08 and was ready to give it up (I didn't just do this for the money, but $0.08 for three months work!) but two years and 240 odd lenses later Squidoo is as fun as ever and I have made many new friends, but Squidoo also pays a nice extra income (of which I like to give some to wildlife and conservation charities e.g. WWF and keep some for myself)

My specialist subjects are physics (I read Physics at Oxford University) and Silicon Chip Design, while my hobbies (and in some cases second careers) are Wildlife Photography, Finance, cooking, making money on-line and Classic Cars and I have written about all of them, but which have been the most lucrative from a Squidoo perspective?

My Main Passion: Wildlife Photography

After getting off to a slow start I began my world travel and wildlife spotting adventures in my early twenties. Perhaps the highlight was my trip to Borneo and the Malaysian Rain Forests. I documented my trip in one of my first Squidoo lenses: The Rain Forests of Borneo and this has been one of my most popular lenses and certainly the most decorated: It has been "Lens of the Day" twice and also awarded a "Purple Star" so arguably this is my best lens. It isn't my most lucrative however.

My Most Lucrative Lens

Highest Paying Lens Category: Classic Cars

Classic Car Review Lenses

My main passion may be wildlife and the environment, but I also have a guilty alter ego who loves classic cars (I rarely drive however so hopefully I don't damage the planet too much) I have owned many classic cars including Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Jaguars and have found lenses on the subject to be very popular and quite a good money spinner. All of my car lenses have been a fairly good source of income and some very good.

Great list! I'm not quite up to 50 lenses yet here at Squidoo but I've been on here much more regularly over the last few months, and building up my portfolio here. I've been blogging since 2006, so between my other sites and this one I'm starting to figure out what is most profitable for me, but it always helps to see another perspective!

@wordpress-guru: Thanks. Yes, I should add some more detail about the numbers. It does vary from month to month, though, depending on what is trending with the various search engines and at Squidoo and Squidoo do change the payment amounts and calculations, so I would need to constantly update. This lens does give a good idea of what seems to make money, on average.

The reason for only getting $0.08 after 3 months was that it takes that long to get paid and I only had one lens eligible for payment in my first payment run (and Squidoo were only paying $0.08 for each lowish ranked lenses at that time - they seem to pay a lot more now) After a year I had quite a few lenses and the payments were looking a lot more worth-while.

My best few lenses at the moment have made me hundreds of dollars each, in total, although none has gone over a thousand yet, but the majority have made tens of dollars and a few have made less than $10 (and probably a few that have made almost nothing, but still act as links to my other lenses so should not be written off as useless) Sometimes a lens becomes popular for a few months or makes a few large sales (i.e. big commission payments) and makes a lot, then goes quiet again.

      I hope that helps.

@Andy-Po: Trick is to recommend something.. do electronic reviews, reviews on popular kids toys, write short little guides and promote them through a lens. I have hundreds of dollars off one electronic lens.. you can do it too.

Super lens, Andy. Really interesting to get a flavour for what works better than others. Given me some food for thought and ideas for more lenses (ooh dear, I'm totally sucked in now...again) :)

I haven't reached 250 lenses yet ... but as I am inching my way towards 200 I've been looking at my lenses with the same questions. Oddly enough, my results seem to be consistent with yours - especially since my one and only classic car lens has made more sales of books and teeshirts than any of my others. Does that mean people who love classic cars buy more books and teeshirts? LOL I liked this lens - and I especially enjoyed your bio section right above the two LOTD awards - you made me laugh out loud for real. Thumbs UP.

Love Twitter - I'm new to Squidoo and wondering how to add profit to the fun - and you have so generously answered my questions! I love your variety - and can't imagine ever reaching 250 lenses... although I do have some ideas for my 2nd one... Thanks for your inspiration - Sundae ;-)

@jptanabe: Well that would be telling... But, just between you and me, it's a good job I have another source of income. I don't think I have ever made more than $100 from any one lens in one month and I have a quite a few that make almost nothing, but the income has got a lot better over the last few months, with several lenses making tens of dollars each month. (if only I could make tens of dollars from all 250 lenses!)

Andy you have some great lenses - and your photography is just wonderful. Now, I just wonder how much money your lenses that make the most money make!
