HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE SEVEN QUALITIES OF THE WISE
We are living in difficult times. Wisdom has been abandoned and fools reign. Our leaders are not to be admired and those who are admired do not wish to lead. It seems governing has now degenerated to name calling and self-interest. People do not seem to understand the principles of the wise.
There were men in the long ago past who were considered the wise among the wise. The Jews called them Pirkei Avos or the (Ethics, Please see my next article for further explanation Teaching of Our Fathers. They outlined for the ignorant how to conduct ourselves in order to act as the wise act. The following is their advice to us.
THE SEVEN QUALITIES OF THE WISE
If you are in a meeting or a conference, let those wiser than you speak first.
Then while a colleague is speaking, do not interrupt.
When he has finished, if he has raised a point which you wish to question, confine your words to the issue at hand.
When it is your turn to speak, organize your thoughts in logical or chronological sequence; first things first; last things last.
With your views and ideas, give their sources; name the authorities from whom you have learned or derived them.
If you offer something original, do not fear to present it honestly as such.
If, after all sides have been heard, you realize that the other person is right, acknowledge the truth.
