Work at Home Moms (WAHMS)-Discover the Fortune That Lies Hidden in Your Home

Updated on April 21, 2014

Work at Home Moms-WAHMs

How to Start a Real Home Business for WAHMs

Work at home moms (WAHMs)-you can avoid the many work at home scams that are rampant on and off the internet if you follow the advice on this page. Because I am going to tell you about a fantastic way to discover the fortune that lies hidden in your home and start a real business you can operate from home.

If you, like me, consider stuffing envelopes, completing surveys, working from home typing, carrying out repetitive data entry jobs, paid surveys, organizing parties to sell stuff to your friends, attempting to recruit friends and family to muli level marketing “opportunities” to be not exactly what you had in on.

Because I am going to set out exactly how to start a real business working from home, no matter where you live and regardless of your current circumstances.

You may be a mom who had to quit work to look after children and never got back into the least not yet.

You may have no children at all but through no fault of your own find yourself without a job.

You may even be someone who would like to ditch the 9 to 5 grind of a job or career and like to spend more time at home with your kids but still want to work and run your own business.

What I am about to describe works. I know because my wife has done it in the last three years.

Local Business Marketing

Web Design and Online Marketing Services for Local Businesses

You can easily set up a web design/online marketing business working from the comfort of your own home for local businesses.

Before you decide that you don’t know anything about web design or marketing on the internet bear with me because you can easily acquire the necessary skills.

But you need to make sure that you are not wasting your time acquiring the wrong information from the wrong sources.

Because you will not be able to provide any long term value to your new clients with tricks or ploys to try to fool your clients…or the search engines.

And to get started all you really need is a telephone, internet connection, and a computer.

Firstly though, let’s look at the opportunity in your local community.

97% of people search online when looking for a local business.(Source: It is these local businesses, the mom and pop operations, which are your target market.

These hairdressers, restaurants, cafes, stores, hardware stores, convenience stores, plumbers, tradesmen, landscapers in many cases know little or nothing about how to exploit the explosion in traffic that has taken place on the internet.

And of course the power of the internet to grow your business, especially small local businesses.

But all these small business owners and trades people are very well aware, through the news, pop culture, politics, family, friends etc. of the power of sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest and so on.

And they are very much aware of the fear of being “left behind” in the development of their business because they see sons, daughters, family, and friends all participating on the internet on a daily basis.

The types of online marketing services you can supply to these busy business owners include:

  • Website creation
  • Facebook page creation
  • Setting up YouTube channels
  • Search engine optimization services
  • Pay per click services management
  • SMS/text marketing
  • Mobile websites
  • Google Places page service
  • Bing local business marketing

Quite frankly, the list of potential services for you to provide is endless. And all of these services can be provided working from your own home.

You will of course have to go out “on site” and meet your new clients. But an awful lot of the donkey work in terms of lead generation and client acquisition can be done from home…through online marketing, email marketing, the phone, pay per click advertising, and so forth.

Once you get your first clients and provided you do a good professional job you will get repeat and referral business.

Work Required to Build Real Business

Building a Real Home Business Requires Hard Work

Don’t get me wrong-there is plenty of hard work required.

You simply cannot start any business, either from or anywhere else, and expect it to succeed without hard work.

And there are some basic but essential skills that you will need to acquire in order to provide a good service and really build your business.

But the good news is that this hard work and learning the necessary skills to succeed can all be done from your home.

And best of all you can do so at a time that suits you and which allows you to fit your work around your other obligations like getting children ready for school and so on.

If this sounds like too much effort for you maybe you are not ready right now to commit to building a real business.

Sure, you can set up a little blog or website and try to make some money from affiliate marketing or Adsense or other affiliate programs like Amazon, Commission Junction etc.

Or you can spend a lot of time and effort writing articles for sites like Squidoo or Hubpages or other sites where you can make some money.

And of course you can try to get some free lance work on sites like,, and others.

But you are really just creating a job for yourself and sooner or later the demands of your freelance clients will begin to impinge upon your home life because you really won’t be in charge.

The competition from workers from less developed economies all around the world will also ensure that there is always downward pressure on the hourly rate you can charge.

Soon you can end up in a downward spiral racing to the bottom on the basis of who is cheapest provider.

Pardon my bluntness but this is no way to build a real business.

Contrast this with making between $500 and $3,000 for a simple website for a local business which will take you a couple of hours to build.

Compare freelance work with building Facebook business pages for local businesses and charging a couple of hundred dollars and being able to easily do two or three while the kids are in school.

Consider providing SMS/text marketing services to local restaurants or making a professional looking video and uploading it to the YouTube channel you create for them.

The money you can make providing all of these services can be very significant and with hard work you can quickly scale up your business through outsourcing.

Offline Business Marketing

Offline Marketing Services

All of the services I have outlined above are “online” or “internet marketing” services.

But you don’t have to stop there. You can provide a range of “offline marketing services” such as copywriting, postcard campaigns, lead generation, improving advertising copy of marketing materials etc.

The potential here is truly enormous. There is one thing you are going to have to deliver though: results.

Quite frankly you can name your price for any of the services you will be providing provided you are generating leads and new business for your clients.

And at that stage it truly is a “win-win” situation for both your new business and the clients that you serve.

Acquiring the Necessary Skills Can Be Done Onlinie

Learning the Necessary Skills to Start Your Home Marketing Business

There is a lady called Lisa Parmley who has a couple of training programs which teach you all the necessary skills to be able to professionally provide online marketing and web design services to local businesses.

She is a former research scientist and has been making a lot of money online since she sold her first product in 2001.

She is a fabulous teacher as she explains everything about search engine optimization, building websites, how to rank sites well in Google and so on in easy to understand language.

And she provides her training online through a range of teaching materials such as video, downloadable documents, and checklists/cheat sheets.

She has a Masters Degree in Science and clearly has a real talent for teaching.

It was her 1st training program, Inline SEO, that got my wife started with her web design and internet marketing business about three years ago and my wife has seen her business go from strength to strength since then.

She has two training programs currently: “Inline SEO Version 2.0” and the “Authority Site Model”.

She provides a significant amount of free video training and some very useful free reports to give you a good understanding of what is involved in her training and whether it is right for you or not.

If you are serious about starting a real home business and if you are prepared to work hard you should act now and not put it on the long finger.

We all know that there are many times when we have good intentions but “stuff” just gets in the way and other things come up..

You can learn more about both of her programs here.
