10 Reasons to Join HubPages!

Updated on December 10, 2011

Joining HubPages is Easy!

If you don't need any further convincing and want to join right now just CLICK HERE

Otherwise, read through my list of 10 reason below, and in Reason #10 I will explain very clearly the steps you take to join. It takes less than 60 seconds.

For just over 3 years now I have been an avid, albeit part-time, writer here on HubPages. I started out with some hesitation, not knowing if it would be a really good fit for my writing hobby. But over time the site has really grown on me.

If you like to write, or would like to try writing online, I would like to recommend HubPages to you. Yes, there are many places you can write online. For example, everyone seems to have a blog these days. HubPages, however, is not a blog. I like to describe it as the "write about what you know about" website. It is a great place to share your knowledge, ideas, experiences and talents.

Possible subjects to consider writing about are:

  • Your Career
  • Your Travels
  • Your Hobbies
  • Your Recipes
  • Your Studies - Bible Study Notes, etc.
  • Your Subjects of special interest
  • Your Poems, stories or ideas...

The list could go on and on. But this is not an article about what to write. It is about where to write - and I recommend HubPages to you.

REASON #1: IT'S FREE!

Yes - It's Free! Totally Free! And everyone LOVES FREE! The wise and humble architects behind this incredible website have discovered a way to make YOUR writing pay the expenses of maintaining this well-designed publication platform. Well, it can also pay some of YOUR expenses too...more on that below (see #5).

Often "free" things come with a catch; small print that you only find out about afterwards. But after 3 years with these fellows I can assure you it will not cost you a dime.

Yes, there are plenty of "free" writing sites available. Therefore keep reading about how HubPages sets itself apart (and above) the rest.

So come aboard! HubPages if Free!

REASON #2 - IT'S FUN!!

Writing is fun. Writing for HubPages is...well...MORE FUN!

Why? Your articles, stories and thoughts are instantly accessible and easy to broadcast quickly among the HubPage community and your own friends. It is fun because HubPages tends to generate a LOT of interaction and comments. You meet other "Hubbers" and get to discuss your ideas and articles, as well as reading some very interesting pieces by other talented writers of course!

Another fun aspect of HubPages are the CONTESTS! Every month a new writing contest begins and offers you a new creative challenge. Individual prizes of up to $500 are available for the top performer! CLICK HERE to see a list of some of the cool challenges they have done.

Writing is a fun way to learn new things. Hubpages provides a place to do so. St. Augustine once said "I account myself among the number of those who write as they learn and learn as they write." Writing is fun. And less dangerous than Bungee Jumping or Parachuting. So why not give it a try?

REASON #3 - IT'S EASY!!

If I can do it...well...need I say more? Really...writing on HubPages and creating nice looking articles is VERY easy. I am a member of a number of other writing communities and blogs. But I consider HubPages to be the BEST IN CLASS for an easy to use format that produces good looking articles quickly and easily.

I know what you are thinking...you don't have time to join another online community and figure out all the new gadgets and gizmos that go along with it. But trust me...this site could not be made any easier to use. You simply put your text into a "text capsule" and hit "save." The editing tools look just like any word processor you use. You don't have to know any programming languages. Hey, it even has a SPELL CHECK!! HubPages is EASY!

REASON #4 - IT'S ORGANIZED!

Need a place to organize your thoughts and articles? HubPages can help! You can arrange your writings by topics and organize them into groups. Not only does HubPages help you organize, but they provide a plethora of practical perks to help you manage your Hubs.

  • Want to get notified when someone comments on your Hub? They can do that.
  • Want help crafting a title that will attract more readers? Yep, they got that.
  • Want to follow certain writers and know which ones are following you? You guessed it! Hubpages is all over that.

HubPages is an excellent format to organize all of your writing. Whether it is poetry or prose or simple "how to" articles or opinions...HubPages will help.

REASON #5 - EARN MONEY

Yeah, I know, many people would put this up at Number 1. But personally I did not join HubPages to make money. That was not my intention. I just wanted a simple site on which to publish my pharmacy related articles.

But then...I signed up for an AdSense account (this is FREE & EASY too!). Google places relevant Ads around your articles or stories and PRESTO you are making a little money.

How much money? Well, that depends on how much you want to write. It takes some time to generate good traffic. And you need to always focus on writing good, quality content. But I can testify that it is possible to reach the $5-$10 per day mark. Many get much more. You won't get rich. But that wouldn't be good for you anyway! LOL. But an extra $200-$300 per month can help take the edge off or allow you to support some good causes or ministries.

I want to emphasize that earnings through online writing like this are a long-term investment. It took me longer than most since my writing was rather sporadic. You will need to publish 5-10 good quality articles before even applying for an Adsense account. It may take 1-2 years to see anything significant as far as income.

I am grateful that my earnings this month are able to be donated to help an orphanage in Mexico, Door of Faith, run by a classmate of mine from High School.

"...working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to him who has need." -Ephesians 4:28

REASON #6 - IT'S NICE TO SHARE

You know stuff. Really, you do. You know how to do this or that. You have some great tips for making...well...whatever it is you make. You've seen things! Oh the places you've been and how nice it would be to share your thoughts and experience and advice with others.

Ever made any mistakes? You can write about a bad choice or wrong move and maybe spare someone else the pain of doing the same. Is there a book that has changed your life? A discovery you have made? Write about it. Share what you know.

For me the sharing has gone beyond mere pharmacy related articles. My profile has links to my church and my blog on Scripture called Pickled Eggs which has opened up many opportunities to interact with readers on more serious issues.

Heard enough? Scroll down to #10 and Join for Free Right Now!

How about that secret recipe that everyone loves? Really? You can't share it? C'mon. HubPages is a great place to share.

I Timothy 6:18 "...ready to give, willing to share."

REASON #7 - TRACKING

When I first joined HubPages, all I wanted to do was write. But it wasn't long after this that my focus moved from simply writing to tracking. How many times was your article (Hub) viewed this week? How many times this month? This year? This isn't a vanity issue. It is more about how many people your articles are helping, encouraging, entertaining or engaging.

HubPages has an excellent account screen to allow you to easily view all your articles and track their performance. You can even add a Google analytics account and see where exactly your readers are coming from around the world! Cool stuff. Take a look to the right and see an example of the tracking capabilities.

HubPages also makes it easy to track your own activity (like comments you have made or questions you have asked) within the HubPage community. Additionally, there are many statistics about each article you write that can be reviewed.

REASON #8 - SCORING YOUR WRITING

HubPages helps you become a better writer. If you are interested in developing a better Internet writing presence, you will need to learn to write articles that:

  1. Get found
  2. Get read and
  3. Get recommended.

Read those 3 points again. An effective online writer needs to Get Found, Read and Recommended. I like to think of the HubPage Score (the highest possible score is 100) as a reflection on those 3 things.

Your Hubscore will go up and down, but a consistently low score is a sign you need some work. And don't worry - your score ALWAYS STARTS LOW. It will work its way up over time if your quality is good. A great hub on HUBSCORE can be found here.

Not only does HubPages score your work, but individual members of the Hubpage community can vote your articles up (or down), mark them as interesting or useful, and leave you comments and even fan mail! There are many ways that HubPages allows you to get good constructive feedback on your work!

REASON #9 - GOOD, CLEAN CONTENT SITE

HubPages works hard to maintain a good, clean-content focussed site.

HubPages does NOT allow articles to be published that focus on:

  • Adult content
  • Alcohol or tobacco related promotions
  • Gambling
  • Drugs or illegal activity
  • Violence or weapons

There are many places to write online. But I think HubPages has done a good job trying to maintain a safe and clean site for writers and readers.

REASON #10 - I'll WALK YOU THROUGH IT!

Nothing is better than to have someone else walk you STEP BY STEP through something new.

STEP #1: CLICK HERE - This will bring you to the Join Page in a new window. You will see an example of what this page will look like here to your right.

STEP #2: Pick a user name. What should you choose? It doesn't matter, but you cannot change it. I picked "pharmacist." Not so creative, but to the point. You can use a part of your name, a nickname, a blended name/hobby or anything you like. My only recommendation is to pick a name that will be easy for other readers and writers to type and interact with. Don't make it too long or so random that it is hard to type or remember.

Some very high scoring authors on Hubpages have names like:

  • Patty Inglish, MS
  • Paraglider
  • Sally's Trove
  • akirchner
  • H.C. Porter

STEP #3: Enter your email address and pick a password. Enter the code shown on the screen. Then click the "sign up" button.

YOU DID IT!!

If you decided to join Hubpages after reading this article, let me know. I will "follow" you and do what I can to help promote your writing! Feel free to leave a comment below!

Now you can begin to write your first HUB! Just click "start a new Hub" to begin!
