10 Ways To Write Better a Better Hub Make More Money on HubPages

Updated on July 11, 2011

Are you looking to make more money writing articles? Well, pat yourself on the back, because you are already on your way to making more money. By simply looking for tips on increasing your advertising revenue and writing better hubs, you are already on your way to earning more cash right here on Hub Pages.

Before I get into the details, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have been a freelance writer and editor for over 20 years. I've worked hard, and had my freelance articles published in many magazines. Many of the books that I edited now appear on Amazon, on college campuses, and in bookstores everywhere. So I have more than a little bit of experience on this front.

However, with the advent of the internet, the entire writing market has changed. A determined writer is certain to make a good income simply by marketing him or herself. And that's what we are going to do right here on Hub Pages. So, let's begin.

1. Learn Everything About HubPages

If you want to be the best of the best, then you need to know your market. Do a search on hubs, and learn about important topics like "Making Money on HubPages" and "Increasing Your HubScore." Like any freelance market, HubPages has its own personality. It's up to us to pay attention to the environment and adapt ourselves.

If you have not yet become a Hub Pages member, now is the time to join: Join now.

You do want to join Google AdSense and Amazon Associates too. Note that it may take a few weeks for your Google AdSense account to be approved. Eventually, you will want to sign up for Kontera, too, but wait until you have a really good number of page views per month. Then you can earn a bonus.

2. Write What You Know

You're heard it before, and I'll remind you again: "Write what you know." You are in expert in many things, and you have plenty of knowledge to share with us. HubPages readers want to know about your talents, and learn from your experience. Teach us how to become experts, and we will want to read your hubs. In fact, we will come back again and again.

Are you are in expert in gardening? Do you know how to install a garage door? Have you been teaching your child to read? Your expertise is more valuable than you know. Tell us about it, and we will pay attention. As an added benefit, your joy will come through your article, which means you'll show up on search engines too. And more traffic means more money.

3. Make the First 100 Words Count

Search engines are the key to your income. As you appear higher on each search engine, then you will have more readers. When you have more readers, then you are more likely have people who will click advertisements. When you have readers who click your Google, Amazon, or Kontera advertisements, you will earn more money. And that's the key to Hub Pages, as well as many other writing sites.

So when you write, think about how you will appear to the search engines. When you do a search in Google, what do the results look like? If you imagine the results, you'll remember that each link shows up with approximately the first 50 to 100 words of the article. So make the first 100 words of your article count. If you don't capture the reader's attention in the first 100 words, then they won't click your link.

5. Add Important Titles to Your Pictures

Notice that my article's title is repeated in each picture. This trick offers two main benefits. First, by repeating the SEO words in the article, Google knows my article is about earning income by writing articles. Second, when people look at pictures on the internet, the title of the article will appear. This hopefully will make potential readers think: "Hey, I do need to make more cash." Then they may search for my article. I've given them the exact phrase

6. Learn How the Search Engines Work

Search engines use certain words to determine which websites make the cut. For every 100 or so words, they expect certain words to appear in your text. If these words appear regularly, then the program will assume that you do meet their standards and may include you on their list. So you want to use a variety of keywords that meet the challenge.

However, do NOT keyword spam. If you use the same words repeatedly, the search engine will ban you from their site instead. So, use synonyms too. And don't add words just for the sake of adding words. They can figure out the difference between a legitimate link and a fake one.

One other note on this topic: When you add keywords, the sites that pay you for advertising revenue, like Google AdSense, Amazon, and Kontera will know what ads to put on your page. So choose your words carefully.

7. Make the Most Out of SEO

As we discussed in the previous paragraph, search engines use certain tools to compare websites. One of these tools is SEO. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and it is the lifeblood of your industry. Google, Yahoo, Bing, and all their buddies make a list based upon the results of their spidering system. This system has spidered millions of websites, and determined which ones are qualified to be listed as a result.

I use a tool called the Google Keyword Tool to help me produce find the best words to use in my text. By combining various terms, I am making the most of SEO. I am combining different variations to tell the spidering system what I am discussing.

So, for example, let's say I am talking about "Making Money" and "freelance writing," which of course is the goal of this article. I type this into the Google Keyword Tool and receive the following results. (I organized them from most monthly searches to least.)

  • more money
  • making money
  • earn money
  • how to make money
  • make money online
  • get paid
  • freelance jobs
  • writer jobs
  • freelance writing
  • freelance writer

Now, I will make sure I don't repeat the same words too much, and I will replace them with synomyms. This is a double benefit: it not only enhances my SEO, it also enhances my writing.

8. Update Your Hubs Every Day

I try update each of my hubs every day. There are several advantages to the philosophy. First, fresh content ranks higher in the search engines. And frankly, high rankings are pretty much what matter.

Second, I like to improve my articles whenever I can. Each day, I try to re-read a bit of each article. I can proofread some sections, or tweak other sections. If necessary, I can add a few paragraphs, new images, or a video or two. Every time I improve my article, I am ensuring that I am producing a higher quality hub. And content is always king.

9. Network Using Comments

It's all karma, baby. Networking is a good business philosophy, and it's a good personal philosphy, too. Read many other hubs right here on HubPages, and leave comments. You'll learn a lot about HubPages, you'll learn a lot about life, and you'll begin to meet your favorite fellow authors.

When you're networking by leaving comments, be courteous and help your fellow authors with their SEO terms. Make sure you include some of their keywords in your remarks to them. This will increase the number of keywords in their articles, and it's just a nice thing to do.

Maybe, just maybe, your fellow authors will read some of your hubs and leave nice keyword friendly comments for you, too.

10. Check Your Advertisements

After your page is published, go back and review your advertisements. If you are new to HubPages, you will see Google ads. If you have been in business for a while, then you have probably signed up for Kontera, too, but these ads are entwined in your article. Review these ads and see if they relate to your article. If the ads don't properly reflect the content, then you need to add more keywords.

Keep checking your pages and see what ads pop up. DO NOT click your own ads. If you click your own ads, Google will CANCEL your account. Just look at the ads to make sure that they are focused.

Once you are good with HubPages, you can also customize the Amazon settings to show the appropriate products. However, I'll save that for a later hub.
