5 Reasons You're Not Making Any Money on Hubpages

I wrote my very first blog on Hubpages all the way back in 2010! I really had no idea what I was doing, or where to start. If this sounds like your situation, I'm here to tell you not to give up; the fact of the matter is that you aren't going to earn hundreds of dollars within the first week of writing, especially as a beginner.
I wrote a few poor quality articles and gave up on Hubpages for a full four years. When I came back and checked my balance, I realized that I had unintentionally begun earning a penny or two a day. My hope was restored, and I finally started to put in the effort that my hubs deserved.
I kept at it, and I've made most of my earnings within the past two years because I learned what works and what doesn't. In addition to Hubpages, I started working with other sites and found clients who were able to use the skills I'd learned.
I've been working from home since 2017.
Don't get frustrated and give up on your dreams of working from home and making money online. In 2017, I was stuck in a job I hated and never thought an at-home job would ever be possible. It is, and Hubpages can help you get there.
1. You're Not Using SEO Correctly
The acronym SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and you need to use it effectively if you want your articles to rank high enough in Google. Even if you've written the best, most informative blog on the web, you won't rake in very many views without relevant questions and phrases scattered throughout the content.
How Do I Improve My SEO?
- You should only use 20 to 25 keywords in your post total. Blogs and articles that are too rich in keywords often start to look like sales pages. Even if you get a click, your reader may not finish the entire article. Don't overload your paragraphs with search words!
- Use search phrases in your subheaders, keywords that are large and emboldened draw the eye toward the paragraph below them. This way, your reader doesn't have to work too hard to find what it is that they're looking for. The longer they stay on your page, the better you rank in Google.
- Add SEO phrases to the alt text on the photos featured on your site. Alt tags are great for those who are visually impaired, so use a few search words, but don't forget to describe the image itself.
Search Engine Optimization is somewhat of a beast to learn, but if you can get the basics down, you're going to get more hits on your hubs.
2. You Aren't Sharing Your Posts
You should aim for most of your traffic to come from organic Google searches, but social media can be imperative to your success in increasing Hubpages earnings. If you're using apps and media sites like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, start sharing links to your blogs as well!
Where Should I Share My Hubpage Articles?
- Create a Facebook page and ask your friends and family to follow and share it with others. This is a steady way to generate views and clicks, and it offers you an endless funnel of potentially long-term readers. Use Instagram! The IG app is highly effective in drawing in followers, potential clients, and many, many, views for your hubs.
- If you have a personal blog or website, link some of your hubs to them. Even if you already monetize from your personal site, there's no reason not to couple it with your Hubpages.
- Get a few subscribers! Instead of relying on enough followers on Hubpages to circulate your posts, create an email list. Who do you know that would be interested in reading what you have to write? Print out a few flyers and ask local businesses if you can leave a few on their bulletin board. Most small business owners don't mind if you leave a few informational pamphlets in a designated area, just be polite and ask if they have any media they'd like you to share as well!
3. Your Niche Doesn't Generate Enough Interest
What is a niche? Well, it's essentially your area of expertise; for example, I do most of my writing in the canine and pet niches. There are thousands of searches about dogs, cats, and pets in general that pop up in search engines every single day.
There's nothing wrong with using Hubpages to share poems, short stories, or opinion pieces, but those things aren't going to get you clicks. The harsh reality is that they may never show up in a search engine at all, so save those things for another project.
Consider publishing a book through Amazon instead, and use Hubpages to extend your knowledge on subjects that people are constantly seeking out information for.
Other niches that show up in search engines regularly include...
- The automotive industry, people are always looking for information on how to fix cars and the specifics of vehicles in general. Cars, trains, boats, and planes just get more complicated as our society advances. You'll never have a shortage of readers in this field.
- The health coach industry, you'd be surprised at how often people search for self-care and life coaching help. Women especially want to know what they can do to become more independent, be mothers, and still advance in their careers while holding their own lives together. Look around you, how many women in your life have kids!
- The beauty industry is fairly saturated, but if you keep up with the latest trends and know which influencers, brands, and styles are "evergreen", you can gain quite a following in the Hubpages community as well. Just remember, you want to cover topics that will be useful for years to come, and not just what is considered to be "in" at the moment.
This isn't to say that your niche sucks, or that you should stop writing about it. Just make it a secondary subject or consider starting an outside blog while continuing to use your hubs as a small, continuous revenue stream.

4. You're Not Using Scholarly Links
It's okay to use a "story" voice as an opener for your article and to keep readers interested. However, the people who land on your page need to be able to trust that you actually know what it is that you're talking about. They're looking for someone who is an expert on the subject they're writing about.
How to Find Scholarly Articles
- Look for links that end in .edu, .gov, .mil, as these links represent authorative groups in education and government. You CAN find information from .org sites, but you have to be careful. Dogbites.org, for example, can appear to be reputable. However, it is not; most of the information listed is bias or opinion-based. Avoid sites like these if you're looking for accurate information.
- Use JSTOR, an online library that offers access to thousands of databases full of thoroughly researched factual information. You'll find accurate statistics and plenty of tests and scientific experimenting with detailed notation. JSTOR access is most often found in colleges, but you can purchase an account as well.
- Be sure that if the website is making claims, that there is a credible source or author linked. If not, it's unlikely that the site is credible.
5. Your Post Titles Aren't Eye-Catching
One major reason you're missing out on blog clicks is that your titles are boring, or don't really pertain to the subject matter. Sometimes, this is more difficult than doing any actual writing because it does take a little bit of creativity.
- Use SEO keywords in your blog or article title if possible. You don't want your headliner to sound generic, but it should be simple and to-the-point enough that readers are instantly intrigued.
- Be a little dramatic! If you're working on a blog about body acceptance, you could write something like "10 Reasons Why You'll Never Fit Into Your 'Skinny' Jeans." It piques their curiosity, and you can go into all the details on why they don't need to squeeze into a pair that's too small, they're perfect as is. Essentially, you just want them to seek out the information they think they don't have already.
- Ask a question! Remember how your high school teacher used to tell you to start your story or essay with a question? You can do the same thing with your title.
